I was answering another question on this site about lying, and it got me to thinking that if I couldn't lie (either by not saying anything when someone makes a dumb statement or by facial gestures or whatever) I'd be fired from my job in a second and my roommate would move out in a huff.

You know what I'm talking about: a friend wants to talk about her ex for the 400th time and you really want to say that it's getting old and it would have been fine if she hadn't cheated but you can't -- so you're sort of lying by listening (again!).

Or when you have to bite your tongue to keep from telling people in a meeting that your boss is full of crud when he claims credit for something you did.

So, the question is: Who would you have to avoid if you couldn't lie? Boss, friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, etc.?

I'm really curious about others' answers.

I think that if is a close friend, I would just say "can't we talk about something positive" or "something else".

The boss part of your question is difficult. This can happen to anyone.

Once burnt, I kept my suggestions to myself and present them at an open meeting if possible. I was even told that my ideas were required and why wasn't I suggesting anything. Ridiculous.

I found another job quickly.

I'm curious as well.
I am the type that speaks first consequences be damned.
Some ways it's good.(people appreciate the honesty) Some ways it isn't(don't like the honesty)
My new thing is when I shoot my mouth off and they give me that look that I'm such a jerk, I respond by saying "Yes I'm the jerk, even though I wasn't the one that did(such and such) I'm the one to blame." Oddly enough the ones that don't like the honesty dislike me even more. People don't like it when someone points out there flaws, especially all the time

well i would definitely avoid my boss, not out of respect but because of the things that would come from me to tell her what i really think of her and business knowledge. the others would understand that it's out of respect that i would tell them what they really want to hear. sometimes a friend or family or neighbor just want a little lie to feel good about themselves and i happen to be the one they run to.

My mother. I don't tell her anything and when she asks I brush it off or give her a pleasant answer.
