what religious teachings motivated his protest?

he was angry about salt. he never had enough salt. this upsets me when i'm at a restaurant, but i never take to the streets in protest about it. oh well, it was a different time then.

from what i remember he was a hindu. but further more he protested against the evil british rulers that invaded his country and tore apart india into a civil war. he knew that they were to match to defeat the british by military man power so he staged a non violent protest so the british would give india back to the indians. sort of what the americans and brits have done to iraq..western nations rule through anarchy!

Try reading his autobiography...or for a quick (and a little inaccurate) synopsis - trying watching the movie Gandhi.

No single religion's teachings motivated his protest.
He practiced Ahimsa to a very high degree - ahimsa is not having the desire to do harm (or kill).
