If so, do you think they knowingly lied about these hundreds of gods?

When a person decides to be religious or not, do you think it is important to consider that humans have a long history of fabricating superior beings (including giants, space invaders, talking lizards)?

(Joseph Smith had an encounter with a talking lizard, if you wish to believe...)

There always was God. After man sinned, they started making images of animals, people, anything that they could see. It is hard for mankind to worship someone that they can't see. That is why there are so many cultures that worship the creation and not the creator. As for giants, there is very good proof that mankind was twice the height that we are today. The full skeletons that were found in caves were 10' to 12' tall. There is testimony that human skulls were found that were twice the size of the average head today. I would not of believed it until I saw the evidence! Now the other things. I can tell you this, that back in the 1950's, when the Cold War started, the people needed something to take their minds off of the fact that there could be a Nuclear War at any time. The minds in Hollywood got together and gave the public Science Fiction, Westerns, anything that the public would watch to keep their focus off of the daily pressures of life. I am speechless at the thought of talking lizards!

It's indisputable, I would have thought.

No, not knowingly lied, most of them, but I suspect the incidence of deliberate fraud or untruth has been higher in some times than others.

Go back a way, and "truth" and "story" and "myth" were not so carefully dissected apart as we would like it nowadays. So the question of "is that a TRUE story?" would in some places and cultures simply not arise.
You listen to the story and absorb its truth. Especially if it is the, or part of the, story of your tribe, or place.

That can still happen these days, but now most of us are faced with a cacophony of claimed "truths". And not many learn epistemology or hermeneutics, formally or informally. (Even your term "fabricating" implies a mindset which may not have been present when a concept of deity appeared. Words are tricky.)

Maybe thousands. Every religion seems to think every other god is a fabrication. Why not all of them?

Joseph Smith may have had a little peyote party when he was talking to that lizard. Back in the 60's when people used to think god talked to them, it was usually a revelation after some recreational drug use, LSD for instance. Mushrooms, licking poison toads, many things can cause a religious experience.

Um, hello! McFly!

If gods weren't fabricated, there'd either be NO gods or just one. If a god truly existed, His presence would have to be known by everyone on the planet and it would be the same great creator.

But, since every society on the planet from the beginning of time has fabricated their own god for their own needs, it's safe to say that, yes, humans have fabricated hundreds (actually, THOUSANDS) of gods.

It is highly possible to create many Gods in man’s imagination? Hell yes!!! Look at the Disney Corporation; Walt Disney built is own religion based on mouse. Just think what historians would do with the images left behind from Disney World if our societies were destroyed and historical records are lost. It is not unreasonable to fathom men creating a religion based on Mickey Mouse with no understanding of our world today. Hell Mickey is like to God to some even today.

Man struggles to give meaning to his existence so it is highly possible we have created elaborate systems of beliefs to justify our existence in search for meaning and validation.

Until the industrial revelation what else did man have to with his time but create religions? This is why basing our acceptance just on faith is to damn convenient to accept religion as fact and reality outside of a belief system. In modern society how our religious doctrines come down to us should be highly suspect given how far away we are from its inception or origins.

Is it out of the realm of possibility the belief in God was a philosophical construct sold the uneducated masses? Is possible that a man thought it up and called it divine to sell the idea to the masses? I have come to realize a person that argues based on a faith has little to no integrity in admitting when you have a valid point.

We are indoctrinated into our beliefs. After human is fully educated thusly indoctrinated it would be hard to face a truth that totally destroy their belief system they have come to love and respect so dear. It will happen and it will be hard for many to accept.

it is not really lying. People hundreds of years ago did not understand a lot of things. They believed epidemics ( eg the Black Plague ) were due to god's wrath. Today we know such epidemics are caused by viruses and bacteria.

They had to make up gods to explain what they could not understand.

yes, and jesus is the biggest fabrication of them all. people just don't want to take an responsibility for their own actions, so they create gods to forgive them, so they feel better about doing the wrong thing! any religion that basically says " do what you want, then ask for forgiveness, and everything is fine" is a bunch of BS!

I don't believe that people fabricate gods, I believe that it is difficult for us to understand god so we create images of god that is easier for to associate with. The faces we place on god give us the ability to commune with the divine presence in our own way.

Well duh they have. Not only that, but they have built new religions on top of old religions (Ex- Chrisitianity off of Judism and Islam off of both) and then gave the "daughter" religion the right to tell members of the "parent" religion that they have it wrong.

It's very important to realise this fact...but does half the world do it? Sad to say no.
