I want to start a project to aid shelters with children't birthdays. I'd love for it to be something that could grow into a non profit but right now I need to start small and test the waters. I am having a difficult time finding info on where to start and how. For example, do I just start collecting birthday party items and then try to find shelters? How do I organize this so it can be most effective? Most important I need funders because I can't afford to pay out of pocket. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks a bunch! :)

I would suggest that you start by working with your local non-profit organizations for support. Many volunteer centers have databases of local non-profit organizations that can help you with your project. You might be able to start a project in conjunction with your volunteer center.

You can find your volunteer center through the following links:
http://www.handsonnetwork.org/our-network/
http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/find_center.cfm

The Points of Light Foundation has a great resource site for you as well:
http://www.volunteerresource.org

In conjunction with your volunteer center, you will be able to get additional people as well as some ideas for fundraisers.

Good luck!

First, that is a wonderful idea! Now go a a shelter and talk to someone in charge tell them what you have in mind. The people who work in these places are grateful for any help they can get. Set yourself up a calender, so that you do not get overwhelmed when the shelters start calling you asking to to schedule a date for them. Get the rules and regulations from each center before you buy anything though.
God bless you,
Gloria

I would go to a local shelter or even go to the red cross. You will have to ask alot of questions. Keep a note book on you and just see how others do it. Look up on the internet other organizations and break it down.

You should research organizations and or shelters in your area, then contact them and see what you can do to help. After youv established your self in the charity, then start rasing money and hopefully everything will fall into place from there.

apply to the state for a permit to do that,as a non profit.then look in the yellow pages call business owners to donate.also toy stores for donations.or clothing stores, people will give if your a non profit .you have to have permission from the shelters and they would have to let you know who is having a birthday, why not for old people to?
God Bless you on your venture.
