With honor, courage and grace. Fear, and determination to defend their children. Courage to fight in defense, although they had tried so very hard to avoid fighting and simply flee to a place where they could live in peace.
It was a dark day in American History that the US Calvary hunted down a people who posed no threat to national security or unity, chased them for weeks, and, upon catching them, slaughtered them.
They nearly succeeded in reaching Canada to live in peace. After a 1,400 mile march and within 30 miles of the Canadian border, they were finally cornered in a cul-de-sac valley and attacked mercilessly.
Chief Joseph's surrender speech is considered one of the great speeches of American History:
"I am tired of fighting. Our chiefs are killed. Looking Glass is dead. Toohoolhoolzote is dead. The old men are all dead. It is the young men who say, "Yes" or "No." He who led the young men [Olikut] is dead. It is cold, and we have no blankets. The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are -- perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever."

This more of a question on history. I have extensive knowledge on the war of 1877 between the US and the non treaty Nez Perce. My maternal great great grandmother went through the war as did my maternal great great grandfather . Those that retreated in Big Hole Montana were sent to Oklahoma known as the "hot place" with the US hopes of non treaty dying from the climate change. Others that were lucky enough to get over the Canadian border either mixed in with a tribe from Canada or were able to join the Colville tribe on the Colville reservation in Washington State. The man that made it possible for my great great grandmother to stay alive and my family to survive is buried on the Colville reservation even though he is Nez Perce.
