Hey, i have always wanted to be a boxer and i have forever loved the sport. At the age of 13 i asked my Parents if i could start boxing and they said no, my Dad didn't think i would be tough enough and my Mum said that she didnt want me to get hurt. I am now 14 and known to my mates at school (not boasting or being big headed or anything here) as being quite a tough guy, and can take alot of pain and having a strong punch. My Dad i think i can convince because i have got abit muscualer and am getting fitter each day. A good friend of mine also goes boxing and i was wondering if anyone knows how i can pursuade my parents into letting me take up boxing, or how and where i can join i live in England Staffordshire.

Thx.

Not sure about England since I live in the U.S. but I guess it's the same there. First go to some local boxing gyms and find a good trainer. Boxing gyms can be a rough place, there's always professional fighters looking for sparring partners. Suggest you don't get into the ring with any of these guys until you are pretty sure you can take care of yourself.

I found a professional trainer who taught me one on one. On Saturdays I would meet with some other guys and we would box. Some were former fighters and some beginners like myself, but all were friendly and were not out for blood.

Next is protective gear, a mouth piece is or course required and some head gear is a pretty good idea. Always wear hand wraps when working out, and bag mitts ( a very lightweight glove) when hitting the heavy bag. Here in the U.S. we also have boy's clubs and other places where young guys like yourself can learn boxing, I think this would be the safest place to get started and your father would approve of you going there.

There are also many exercise gyms here in the U.S. that offer boxing classes. It's mostly an exercise class and I don't think it is a good place to learn boxing.

You need the proper training, first is learning the proper footwork, keeping your balance and learning the big "D" (defense). You have to be able to slip, duck and catch punches. Another thing is throwing "combo's", there are only 5 basic punches in boxing but they can used together in many combinations. Professional boxers put in many hours of training before they step into the ring to fight.

Tell you dad that you will be learning discipline and this will in turn will help you in getting better grades in school. Good luck to you.

Do some research, find out how much it's going to cost, how much time you will have to invest into it, be prepared with all of this information, then go to both of your parents sit them down and show them that you're serious and focused on this. Any questions they ask you will be able to answer them without hesitation and tell them you have seriously thought this through and are determined to try it out. And that if its not for you, your young and can always move on but you'll never know until you try.
