How abot Dora? She's in books and tv! If you have the right color shirts and shorts, you could just give her a backpack with a map full of useful things (like sticky tape!)
A lot of the books my 2 1/2 year old daughter reads are also on tv even if we don't watch the tv shows. Like Blues Clues. If could do a dog outfit, you could also be Spot. You could make mouse ears and be Maisy. Dress all in red and be Clifford.
You could be almost any animal and have it be from a book. We like Duck in a Truck, featuring Duck, Goat, and Sheep characters.
We also love the Wide Mouth Frog! wear all green -- make some little flies out of the foil.
One of the Little People, Runaway Bunny, she could be you from the Mommy Book
I would ask her what her favorite book is right now and go from there. If she likes the outfit, she'll be more likely to leave it on and explain it to her friends!

OOh lucky you!! My daughter came out of school on the thursday before half term with a letter asking if the children could come in TOMORROW(!!) wearing something chinese to celebrate the new year. Short answer was eh, no!
I like the above suggestion of the hungry catterpillar, though, and it could be done quite simply.
Dress her all in green with some feelers made out of a cereal box and stick little pictures of the food he eats onto her tummy from magasines or your own art work. You could even get your other chid/ren to help. Do you know the book?
He eats a hole in1 apple
2 pears
3 plums
4 strawberries
5 oranges
1 chocolate cake
1 ice cream cone
1 pickle
1 slice of swiss cheese
1 slice of salami
1 lolli pop
1 piece of cherry pie
1 sausage
1 cup cake
1 slice of water melon
1 nice green leaf !!
Or you could stick several pairs of socks to her sides for the extra legs
Good luck with your blue peter badge!!

Tell me about it my son was off nursery ill last week, when grandad brought him home toight he said by the way he needs a costume for book day TOMORROW. I'm afraid my son's gonna have to be spiderman as that's all we have really. Not really character they were looking for no doubt but it's short notice. How about Dora the explorer send her in a pink t-shirt with a backpack!!

Little house on the prairie or poineer girl. Braids and a cute dress. Give her a little basket or pail for her "lunch". Easy.
