Stephen Fry stated that humans are the only ones to look where you point and that all other animals just look at your finger. My dogs look, and/ or go where I point. ( Episode of QI).

Yep, you're right!

My dogs go or look where I point too.

I like Stephen Fry, but sometimes he gets it wrong!!

I think it depends on the dog. I had an Irish setter who only ever looked at the finger. Then we had a Border collie who looked where you pointed and followed hand signals without being deliberately trained. If he'd lost a toy you could point to the area it had landed in and he'd look there. Now we have a collie pup who just looks at your finger, but he's still only 4 months.

All animals look at the finger. I cant believe anyones would look where you point unless you made a throwing motion then a dog might, but thats not a real point.

i'm no longer possibly advantageous. It relies upon on the cat. a million/2 of the time, my cat will sniff my finger. the different a million/2, she'll seem to work out what i'm pointing at and pass sniff to work out if this is something thrilling. this is in many cases nutrition i'm pointing at that she ignored, so because it is probably why my cat comes to a decision to look, yet in basic terms a million/2 of the time.

That guy was full of crap, when i point my finger first my dog looks at my finger to see where its pointing and then she looks at where i pointed. This is a trait of a smart dog, you must have a smart dog like me. Have a good day.

My Lab/Sheppard mix does. I can give any command with just a nod of my head, or gesture with my hand. I never have to say a word. I play catch with her like two people playing baseball. I take the ball, tap it twice with my hand and she will go to the back of the yard, turn around and sit. I then raise the ball, tap it once and she stands at attention. I can throw the ball as hard as I can and she will catch it. If I need her to go somewhere I just point in that direction, she will turn her head and look in that direction, look back at me and then I give the point and go signal with my hand and she goes.

99% of the time my dog looks at my finger.. Which can be irritating. Likewise, she will always try to bite my hand as opposed to the toy in my hand..
That 1% of the time I think she actually looks over there because of my words not my finger..
Interesting question though.

My dogs will look at something I am pointing at but I thought it was just because they are nosey like children and want to know whats going on.

Mine look at my finger but that is because I have trained them to sit when I point at them and they are used to treats being in my hand!

ha ha lol! Yeah my dogs look at me first, then where I point! Then I usually very excitingly say get the squirrel\bird, etc. followed by whispering "go get em'" after they stare in the direction I pointed and lock on. Cool question!
