First thing you should check: your head for thinking of buying such a crappy car.

Dude, I own a 99 jeep grand cherokee and I would highly advise staying away from that particular model. I think the 99s were the first line of grand cherokee that the manufacturer was churning out and they were packed with problems. The 99 jeeps constantly broke down and I know others that happened to have the same problem. I also remember it had a recall back in 02 and a guy has a lawsuit filed against Jeep claiming the product was inferior. Get a different vehicle or you will start to live in the service shop like I had to.

I drove a Jeep for awhile.

The Grand Cherokee has a common problem with the driver's side window where it CAN get stuck. When you test the car, put the window up and down a million times to see. Remember me when you go test drive one.

The 4 wheel drive should be fairly simple to check. Firstly, if it's deffective you should see the light come-on on your dashboard. I know that's a simplistic thing to say, but it's true. You also FEEL the difference when switching.

Good Luck!

99 Grand Cherokee's are known for their relatively poor reliability, BUT 51000 miles for $7k is very un-heard of.

To check it's VIN history, go to Carfax.com and pay the $15- it is well worth it.

As for the 4WD, read the owner's manual and follow it's instructions for engagement. If it sounds OK, chances are it works OK. Funny noises or leaks from the underside are a red flag.

If you can take it to a mechanic to give it a quick once over that would help a lot.
We have a grand cherokee in the shop right now,'99 and it looks like a computer problem.
Always look for the common problems in any used auto.
Good Luck
