Please help me. I don't really want to keep going on to symbols. Thanks.

ALT + (3 digits) produces most French accents:
eg;
ALT + 132 =ä
130 = é
135 = ç
I did a word document of all the letters and printed it off for reference. Experiment!

You could go into symbols and assign a shortcut to the relevant accents. There are keyboard shortcuts which I got by consulting Word help. I typed in 'Insert an international character by using a shortcut key' and got accents for French, Spanish and a couple of other languages.
Hope this helps.

One way to do this is to switch to french as your default language while you are working in french. To do this:

1. In Microsoft Windows XP, on the Windows Start menu, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Office, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Microsoft Office 2003 Language Settings.

2. Click the Enabled Languages tab.
In the Choose the language that defines default behavior in Microsoft Office applications box, select the language you want, and then click OK.

3. A message appears describing the effects of the change. To continue, click Continue and lose customizations.

Thanks, Caicos Turkey, for teaching me a whole lot of new tricks !

Unfortunately, although they work well on Microsoft Word, they don't seem to work on all formats - this one, for instance. Anyway, by now, I've become so accustomed to using the three-digit ASCII codes, that it'll take me some time to remember the slightly more logical ones using the Control key, so I'll go on using Alt+133 for à, Alt+135 for ç and so on for the time being.

There some also some characters you can get using the Alt-graphic key (to the immediate right of the space bar). For instance, AltGr+e gives é, AltGr+E gives É and so on for á, Á, í, Í, ó, Ó, ú and Ú and also AltGr+4, which gives €. In addition, you can get the following symbols on Microsoft Word (but not on Yahoo Answers): ¿ (AltGr+?), inverted exclamation mark (AlGr+!), ® (AltGr+r), copyright symbol (AltGr+c), trade mark symbol (AltGr+t).

Just tell your computer you're using a French keyboard (even though it's a Qwerty) and get a copy of a French (Azerty) keyboard so you know where all these accents are.
I have a tiny "language toolbar" at the bottom of the screen where i can switch keyboards easily. Alternatively, i can use shift+alt (but you can change that).

Go to start menu then Accessories then system tools then character map, from there you can either copy symbols or set up shortcuts for the french symbols.

=:-)

Yes - CONDOMS.

You can determine the "ALT" codes and use those rather than the character map. E.g. ALT+130 = é. Numbers must be entered on the number pad rather than the top row of the keyboard. I've given you a link to Alt codes below.

you have to discover them
I found that holding ALT and hiting a code (at the same time) will show many symbols/letters from other languages
for example ALT 160 is á; ALT 168 is ¿, ALT 130-134 are respectively: é, â, ä, à, å

What? Why did people answer durex and condoms? Don't get it...
Anyway, once you go onto symbols once you can copy and paste the letters every other time you want them.

Yes! There are selections that you can use so it won't mark French and other language words as wrong. Just select them.
