lol...I don't mind the leap frog books...however...we do regular board books most of the time and we usually read each one about 4 times before we get bored...lol So we read about 20 stories before bed...lol
But the toy that spooked me the most...I'm talking all time creepy heeby jeebies...was that damn Teddy Ruckspin...I don't know if they still make them...my sister had one and it HORRIFIED ME...lol
It's this stupid motorized bear that has a tape player in it...and you put in a cassette and it's eyes roll around and it opens and shuts it's yap all to the beat of whatever song happens to be on the tape ...or it would read along a story...I'm Sorry...but that thing would give me nightmares...It looked like a possessed devil bear...lol

While it's a parent's job to teach their children there comes a time when a child needs to know how to sit down and learn things on his or her own. These toys aren't meant to take the place of parent/child one-on-one but to allow the child to learn at the same time that they are playing.
I have a spooky toy to beat ALL spooky toys. Ever seen the Miracle Baby? It feels like a dead person. It's supposed to have life-like skin but this is stretched over the robotics inside giving it a strange feel. It also acts human. My daughter had one and it's head fell off. I didn't know whether I should be scared or grateful.

You are so right on that one!
If you want kids, you should be able and willing to take the time and do stuff with them. Read them stories, help them learn how to write ... I can understand if a parent doesn't always have as much time, hell I know I won't for sure, but that still doesn't mean you can't take a minimum of time out of your day for your child. Why else do you have children if not to care for them and play with them?

I disagree and feel you are being a bit harsh by insinuating that people who buy these toys shouldn't bother having children. I read to my 1 year old all the time and play with him but he also has toys like the ones you describe because he enjoys them and they make a change from mummys voice. I dont think there is anything wrong with these toys, all that is needed is a little balance between the time children spend reading and interacting properly and the time they spend playing with automated/mechanical toys. Its a matter of common sense. Lastly, I would rather see my little boy playing with a leapfrog educational toy than a gun or sword. There are worse things happening with the children of today than the introduction of leapfrog

My son loves his leapfrog learning pad. I agree it's no substitute for reading to your child. We read together every day. If you don't have more than one child, you may not realize there are times in the day when you cannot spend quality time reading and writing with your child. I have an infant to care for as well as a house to keep clean. I'm glad the Leapfrog system is reinforcing the skills I teach my son when I'm not available. It's better than video games or television.

Some parents have allowed themselves to already be replaced and they like it. While it's true about the books, TV and video games are tons worse. It's because parents let their kids plug in, and I think they are so addictive that when parents take them away kids get cranky and upset--they are in withdrawal. We will never have video games in our house, and my kids can only watch 1 hour of TV a day.

I agree. I'm all in favor of educational toys, but they shouldn't take the place of parenting. Like the videos that read your kid's book to them??? Honestly, books are generally a good ALTERNATIVE to television.
It's one thing to have the singing caterpillar that teaches the letters, but my children will never have a toy that is supposed to read anything to them. That's my job.

My son had this little ball thing that you were supposed to throw hard against the floor and then it would start shaking and bouncing around. That thing had a mind of its own though and would go off for no reason in the toybox.

I think LeapFrog Toys are great, but they should by no means replace time spent with a parent.
