Since I was once a person of faith, it's possible that I will have a moment of doubt when my time comes, having grown up with such beliefs. People have strange reactions when faced with imminent death, but that doesn't make god-belief true. It just means that human beings instinctively fear death and things learned as a child are often very hard to unlearn. It may be that I will die with a great sense of satisfaction about my life and how I have lived it. Naturally I hope the latter is true. We'll see. I'm not going to worry about it. Worrying about one's death is a misuse of life.

Perhaps you will wonder on your deathbed whether the one true god is Allah and you should have been wearing a burqa all these years. Or perhaps something written by an atheist on this forum thirty years before will leap to your mind and you'll suddenly realize that there is no afterlife and you're about to cease to exist. Who knows?

I will curse Fabyollah and die!

No actually, I think the whole "fire insurance" thing is a cynical scam that any god who is god will see through. In fact, I think the whole Christian thing of a deathbed confession that they "believe" some historical figure died for their crimes and they get to go to heaven no matter how evil they've lived is just reprehensible and encourages criminal and anti-social behavior, like Constantine I, a lifelong pagan who executed his wife and son, but who converted on his death-bed and was canonized a "saint" for making Christianity the state religion, or Ted Bundy, famous rapist and murderer who "found Jesus" before his execution.

Humans often when backed into a corner or when it seems all other options have been used will grasp at anything they think might help.

I hate when christians say there are no atheist's in foxholes.

First of all, if a person were to grow up never hearing of a God of course they aren't going to call out to him. Maybe they'll call out to their mommy or something i dunno.

Second, a person not raised in a christian society will not call out to the abrahamic god. They might call out to budda or the flying spaghetti monster. . who knows.

This is the same for those on their death bed. Not a good case to try and tell me that your God exists. Sorry

The problem is that I just can't force myself to believe in a god. It's not really that I don't want to, it's that I just don't. It's the same feelings that I have about Santa Claus...because it would be wonderful to receive presents every Christmas just for being a "good girl". I can't force myself to believe that there is actually a Santa Claus just because it would be nice if he existed. I can pretend, but that does no good for me either way because if there is a god, then he would probably know that I was pretending.

"If not then you should". What makes you so sure you are 100% correct. When i'm on my deathbed hopefully I will have been a good person and if there is an all powerful deity, he wouldn't be shallow enough to give a damn if I was religious or not and instead let me into "paradise" based on my character.

I have had two really good friends who claimed to be atheist. Both died of a terminal illness. Both cried out to God during their last days.....That says a lot to me........

Also I know people who also claim to be atheists that curse like a sailor ( not sayinf that all do by any means ) The thing that throws me is that they say g.d. all the time. They use God's name in vain all the time....My point is , why would you curse someone you do not believe in ??

Nope, say what you will, But I believe there aren't many true atheists, if any.

When you're on your deathbed, will you believe in all Gods just in case. If not you should!
Doesnt my response seem more neutral toward the world's religions and more fair than your question.

Do you never read other questions? Wow, you must be the first person who used some play on Pascal's Wager. Right!

Belief - To have confidence in the truth or value of something

So semantically speaking, you can't really have belief "just in case". Doesn't reconcile. Nice try!

It seems to me that believing in God "just in case" is spiritually and intellectually dishonest.

No, why would dying change my beliefs and make me believe in a non-existent supernatural being? That would be like me asking you if you were told by God to jump off a bulding would you believe in superman:a non-existent supernatural being, to save your life. It's just not going to happen!
