Bird boxes should be erected with the hole facing east so that it gets the early morning sun to stimulate the birds to go out and feed as early as possible, Also the sun warms up the inside of the box so fhat the chicks are warmer earlier. The late afternoon sun which is usualy hotter is not shining on the box so that the chicks do not overheat. Most storms come from the west or south west so it is best to have the hole away from this direction.

East of course! Remember "the early bird gets the worm", and that's the direction the sun shines from in the AM. so they will be able to wake and feed early...

It depends on the species of bird you are looking to attract. Many of the above answers are good, but you should look into the preference of the particular bird species...
Example: Wood Ducks prefer boxes that face trees rather open areas and water.

North or South -- if you face it East or West, there will be an uncomfortable amount of light seeping into that "private place" at least once a day, and they won't want to nest.

I would face them any direction but west because that's normally which direction storms come from and it may rain in on the nest.
