Unless you were friends with the ex before you started dating, there is no reason to keep the relationship going. In my case, my gf has many friends who she used to date. I'm fine with that b/c she was friends with them first, so there was a friendship there. However, there is one person who she wasn't friends with, they were stricktly lovers. And I am not cool with her staying friends with this ex. If you weren't friends before you got together, then why are you trying to be now?

Well grasshopper, to the best of my knowledge on subject matter.
When it comes to Ex's, it's as all relationships of the heart go, the feelings that seem so real at the time of blossoming love finds some reason to disappear into lost memories. In this era of trying to live up the the illusions of TV love, one becomes jaded to real love. Love becomes a chance meeting that disappears as if two were passing ships on a foggy night.
As long as this life style is ones motto, ones happiness sought becomes ever more illusive. Always remember the trail traveled has it's own factors that reminds one that survival depends on knowing that every thing has a price or better yet just realize that what ever you do has a price tag that states, IT GOES WITH THE TERRITORY Accept the policy and you may wake up a decade or two later with out carrying to much baggage.
The truth is that along the way there are a few that will become life long friends, respect those relationships for life requires some long commitment of the heart no matter the degree of communication. This understanding is lived by realizing that life is made of circles that reacquaint living memories. These memories have it's place in life. It's up to you to keep positive with relationships of life. Sex doesn't have to be the glue that makes since of it all.

Yes, it is okay to stay away. If this is how you choose to deal with an ex-relationship that is fine. I am the same way, I don't want to be their friend, we were in a relationship at one time for goodness sake! I dated one guy for a few months and we talk when we see each other but this relationship was never that serious. I do not talk to any of my exs, except for my baby's daddy and that is only for my daughter's sake. You do whatever you have to do to comfort yourself and move on!

Yes girl. If you feel you need to stay away then do that. You probably weren't friends before so what is to say that you need to be friends now that the relationship is over. It all depends on the circumstance and the two people if you can truly just be friends. I have done it both ways.

Stay away is not a good idea at all. I would recommend to be friends. You people can learn from each other. Life is too short to come closer, how can we waste time in moving away and inviting heart aches ?

My opinion is to stay away is better. I mean, if you run into each other, you can say hi, but don't go out of your way to keep in touch, it just prolongs things and makes it difficult for new relationships. I had a boyfriend who stayed friends with all his exgirlfriends and it drove me nuts with agitation and jealousy.
He didn't know how to just let it go.

If there are no children involved, certainly it is ok to stay away and not ever talk again. However, if there are children involved you have to try to get along and stay in contact for the sake of the kids.

Its completely up to you. Some relationships the 2 ppl just grow apart but don't end on bad terms so a friendship still remains. On the other hand if one of you still have feelings for the other then its better to just have a clean break.
