I had grades 1-5 in Catholic school in 1961-66. It was extremely strict, they gave us a LOT of homework every night. There were no computers in that time of course. The books were pretty basic. They were allowed to beat us as much as they wanted, no one ever did anything about it. We learned a lot because if we didn't do well in school, we would have been punished, badly. I am not kidding.

I was in the grade school in the 50s. We had
"Fun with Dick and Jane" books to learn on. They taught us to read by using phonics---sound out the letters to form the words.
We had about 30 students per class, one teacher, no aides or assistants. Parents were involved perhaps every 2-3 months.
Girls had to wear dresses, even when it rained.
We were verbally reprimanded if we acted out, so that was rare. We treated our teachers and all adults with respect.
Classrooms had minimal "decoration". We started our day with the salute to the flag. There were state and world maps that rolled up when not in use.
Every month or so, we were taken to an auditorium to watch an educational program on the TV.
