be sure you have administrator or at least enough privlidges on your user account to install programs. if you do then
it could be a bad system file, a malware/spyware/trojan or even hardware, a ram stick going bad, a hard drive thats to fragmented or has bad sectors.
i'd go from least painful solutions to worse case in order.
1. run adaware or spybot etc
2. shut off screensaver & any programs that are down in task bar by clock, especially anything to do with anti virus etc
3. go to add/remove programs and look thru list is there anything there you don't recognize or dont want, remove them.
4. download & install Ccleaner and run the 3 scans
5. in control panel >internet options> delete cookies>delete files
include offline.
6. run disk cleanup (start>all programs>accessories>system tools)
7. run defrag (whether it says you need it or not)
if during any of these computer locks up i'd download and install memtest follow its directions.
8. last if all these complete without errors but install still wont work load xp cd & reboot, 1st install screen say install into existing partition (c: normally) and then next screen tell it to repair existing installation, if goes all the way through no problems your system should be back to normal, well depending on what xp cd you have you may have to reinstall service pack 2, but everything else should be ok.

Like everyone has said. You have to make sure that all other anti virus programs are removed from your system first. I recommend going to www.filehippo.com and downloading AVG Free.Instead of installing it, save it to your documents, then get off line, go to your control panel, then add & remove programs and remove your current antivirus program. Do a restart, then open up your documents, click on the AVG Free program and follow the prompts.I've used Norton and MacAfee and AVG kicks there butt. They give you automatic updates at what ever time of the day you choose and if you ever have a problem with it they have a forum that will give you answers.AVG found way more virus problems then either one of the other ones combined.

Often one anti-virus software program won't install when another one is already there. For example, a friend of mine had Norton and tried to install Kapersky. No dice! Norton had to be rubbed out. Problem is sometimes, one antivirus gets proprietary and wants to "own the turf". Or sometimes, one antivirus looks and thinks the other is a virus itself!

It depends on your operating system. If you are using windows vista there's no surprise about that. I tried installing norton anti virus and it wouldn't work. What i did was download the trial version of norton then i typed in my activation and now i can use it for one year.

Make sure you have uninstalled any other anti-virus programs before installing a new one. Rarely can you have 2 installed.

Get a router it has a natural firewall and then run a firewall if u want antivirus software is something not needed if you are careful and run a router. anti virus software will mess with a lot of programs u try and run.

If you have Norton or McCafee already on your compuer. you will have to uninstall them before you can install some other programs. This can be a difficult task sometimes. Go to symtech site and download "Norton removal tool" or McCaffe has a removal tool available also.

I too had the comparable undertaking on my comp as quickly as I have been given BT broadband. As earlier mentioned by potential of others, bypass to regulate panel, upload/eliminate classes and choose Norton, and make confident it eliminates all information, try returned to run the applying set up device on bt Yahoo and it would now show you how to do it.
