What can you say to a police officer when he pulls you over for driving with headlights off?

Some gas stations and certain areas are so well lit at night that you don't really notice they're off (hey -- it happens) until you drive a distance.

Hey Lemar (answerer below)... I'm aware that lights are for people to SEE YOU just as much as for you to see them. Unfortunately I don't drive a car that automatically turns the lights on for you. It's not a GM, either.

I think some people out there actually worry about affording a car that RUNS let alone also the requirement that lights automatically turn on.

If the Maker of your vehicle doesn't provide that model with that feature, there is nothing a guy can do. I"m not going to sell my car and buy another one just for that reason.

And no, I wasn't drunk. It's an honest mistake but usually they look at you funny when you tell them that.

Exactly that. You just neglected to turn them on since the place where you were last was so well lighted. I'd say though, that a good portion of the time the people driving without headlights have probably been drinking.

You're being a bit touchy actuallly...especially with Lemar. I didn't say you were drunk, I just meant that it wouldn't take much for a cop to assume it's a drunk since they're already impaired.

A downfall of the auto headlights - my vehicle has them and getting so used to them did lead to a minor problem - I took a 2 hour road trip to meet up with my boyfriend at some game he was scouting and somehow en route, I switched my headlights from automatic to manual without realizing it. When I got to his hotel, I didn't think nothing of the beeping from within my car. Nothing of it till several hours later when we returned from a game to find my car completely dead.

Anothing thing to keep in mind to - back in the mid 90s, one of the urban legends was that a car driving without headlights was one to be wary of and not flash your lights at as it was part of some gang initiation. It was just a 'rumor' but it was one that was communicated to several police stations to be on the lookout for (I originally heard it from my boss at the time and then later from my dad, a cop).

that has happened to me. but it wasnt a police officer thank god, it was another car going the opposite way that flashed me. but you can forget. tell him you were not aware, especially in the early evening. at night let that be the second thing you do (after you start the car and keep them on even when the engine is off so that when you start it back up it will shut on by itself.

Unfortunately, there really is "no excuse" other than to tell the cop the truth. Hopefully he'll let you off with a warning, otherwise, I guess you'd have to take it to court and hope that you can persuade the judge with logic about the situation.

Nothing. You take the ticket. Then you ask yourself why you need to have your lights on.

Contrary to popular belief, having your lights on isn't so much for you to be able to see the road in front of you, it's so that people can SEE YOU!!!

Why do you think so many countries have mandated daytime driving lights? Or why it is so important to have your lights on when its raining? Or why GM have daytime driving lights on every vehicle it sells?

Because its safer to drive with your lights on. Not for the person driving, but those who drive around you who would't see you otherwise.

Why you think about some laws, don't think selfishly about how it effects you, think about how the law effects the people around you. 90% of traffic laws are your the safety of others. Only 10% are for your safety.

state police have more driving experience than the average guy, and will probably believe your story if it happened to them as well. Just tell him exactly what happened. You just didn't notice 'cause everything was so well lit.

You say oops Mr. policeman, sorry, I didn't realize that they were off. Then you take the ticket, go home and write a check for the fine.

in the future don't buy a car that does not turn them on/off automatically. no it's never happened to me. from now on turn your lights on regardless if it's day or night.
