The best thing you can do is carry a small journal with you. Anytime you start to have an episode write down what is going on. Who you are with, where you are, what's going on around you, how your feeling from beginning to end?

After doing this for awhile you will start to see a pattern forming. You will learn what your triggers are. Once you have identified your triggers (or what sets you off) you will be able to recognize them before they set you off and you'll be able to protect yourself and calm yourself.

I was attacked, beaten, and raped. I learned about this in therapy and it really is the 1 thing that has saved me. I realized that being around tall fat men sent me into a panic. I would get nervous and paranoid. Really scared like I was dying or something. I would cry and shake, and on one occassion even hid at work.

Almost 7 years later it doesn't really bother me anymore. I have had a couple of small episodes this last year but nothing I didn't just talk myself through. When I see someone that reminds me of the incident I just tell myself that I'm okay and nothing bad is going to happen to me, I'm safe. I make myself say that. I do deep breathing excercises and pay attention to my pulse and just try to soothe and calm myself down.

I'm not saying that this is easy, it isn't. But it can be done without medication. Just don't be hard on yourself. Take this thing one day at a time, and allow the bad times to happen. It's in those that we learn.

This will get better for you, I promise.

First, I'm sorry for the pain that you're experiencing.

I really can't believe that there are no social service agencies in Scotland that could refer you to a therapist specializing in PTSD.

Even if it isn't the therapist''s specialty, just having someone to talk to would be healthy.

Hopefully, this and other chat rooms will put you in contact with like-minded people.

I'd also check with local hospitals to see if they have support groups for this condition.

And, if things get that desperate, you might want to consider traveling to England where there might be more social services available. Good luck to you.

Speak to your family doctor. He/She might be able to direct you to a therapist.
