Both. Some Covens have a Book of Shadows that has all of their traditions written down in it, and all the coven members study it.
Individual practitioners tend to create their own, and if their spouse and child is interested, allow them to study certain parts of it. It just depends really.

It can be both. You can buy a Book of Shadows or you can write your own.

Isn't the Book of Shadows left blank so you can write your spells in? I thought that was the idea...
