My daughter is 4.5 yrs old. Her long hair goes almost to her bum. I was looking at it today as she played in the BK play area thinking it might be time to cut it straight across mid back (aka bra line). I don't really care for hair that a kid can sit on, habitat for lice, etc. it's getting close but might take till summer to get there. Should I wait til summer to cut it or just cut it now? Why the dilima over hair length? My oldest daughter didn't get long hair till she was in the 5th grade. She cut her own hair at 3 yrs old so bad it had to be evened out at 1 inch all over her head! She looked like a boy for 3 yrs after! So this daughter we let her hair grow abnormally long for us. However, we've gotten so use to it growing that now it seems a shame to cut it. But I've never been one to let it grow past the "bra line". She'll be going into kindergarten next fall if this helps any. I know for school she must wear it up or cut it shorter (bra line) for their policy there. Cut or not?

I discussed this with her and she'd like to donate her "cut hair" to kids with "no hair". I have been cutting hair for 19 years. I forgot to mention that. Thank you all, especially that one about her hair touching the toilet seat...ew gross! never thought of that one!

Ask your daughter if she would like shorter hair. Show her some pictures from hair styling magazines. If she does not like the short styles, help her come up with something that is still long, but not so much hair to have to deal with (i.e. brush, wash, dry, detangle). If you go for a major cut, look into donating her hair to Locks of Love. Check their website and explain it to your daughter. She might really enjoy giving her hair to make a wig for a young cancer patient. We did this when my daughter was 3 and although we hated to cut off all of her baby curls, her hair was so long and it tangled so easily that we felt like we had no choice. Once we heard about Locks of Love and made the decision to donate, we never thought about her hair again. Besides we still have pictures.

I always had a problem with lice when I was in elementry school and it doesnt matter how long your hair is you still get it. But I see no problem with cutting her hair to the "bra line" area, as long as its not too short and hair always grows back. What does your daughter think? I know shes only five but it might be good to at lease ask her what she what her opinion is. If she doesnt want it cut, a trim would at least be good to even it out and everything.

For safety and sanitary reasons, you should cut her hair. (It could get caught in something or it drag on the toilet at school.)
Cut it before she goes to school, so you both are used to it. It will be one less thing to think about before she starts kindergarten too.
If you cut it straight across at the mid-back, she'll still have long hair and it won't be a "hazard." You can also braid it more quickly.
Short hair can be cute and girly too. A chin length bob with bangs is very sweet for a young girl.

I think that long hair on little girls is adorable, but there is definately a limit. With all of the climbing and playing that they do, they should simply be comfortable at their age. I bet it would be just as adorable if you were to cut it to the bra line or even a bit shorter than that and she'd be even more comfortable. I would say to cut it now. Good luck.

What ever you do don't cut the kids hair your self let a pro do it. Second I would just trim it until she has to go to school then I would cut her hair half way down her back. Or if it gets hot this summer cut it at the begining of summer.

Yea, I'd cut it. But look into something like "locks of love." They take the hair to make wigs for kids with cancer or other illnesses that might make them lose their hair. Many hair dressers (even places like Custom Cuts) will cut the hair and take care of getting it to the right agency for you. It's a great way to get your daughter excited about helping others! Good luck!

Mid-back would be very pretty. Actually, even shorter is good- who knows what a 5-year-old can get into at school? I think you should cut it if that's what she wants, and if it's the school policy then you should cut it.

Yes, cut it to the mid back. It will be easier to take care of also. Her hair could drag on the toilet. I had that happen to my hair before and it's really gross.

Long hair to the bum is WAY out of style!
Cut it! I cut my own hair and have for 6 years.. it's cheap and I'm sure it will look alot cuter when you do it too!
