Whenever I see these articles or shows about wine they always refer to the wine as having a particular flavour like fruity , nutty or smooth. Now I for some reason just taste alcohol. Now my question is do I have a low tolerence for it or are my tasebuds just too picky. Can you learn to appreciate different wine flavours or is it just something you can do?

It's something you have to get used to.

It took my palette a few years before I would not taste any alcohol. Now wine is very enjoyable.

OR... you could be drinking really cheap wine, too (tastes too much like alcohol, and not like wine).

Start "educating" your palette, with good quality sweet whites and blushes, with lower alcohol content, then graduate up to dry whites, and reds.

Like anything else, it comes with time and it takes trying new varietals and even foods to learn thses techniques. Wines, when paired with food, seem to open up their boquet more and allow the yout to taste the flavours much better. I would suggest finding a restaurant a wine pairing menu and trying that. They typically serve 6 courses, each with a different wine. That will start to teach you what to "look for". Just know that what you think you taste is never wrong...like you said, tastebuds vary and you may taste something completely different.

My wife had never really tried wine until 2 months ago. We went to some local wineries and she tried some out. As we try some of her favorites with food, she is discovering that some are not so good, but she like others. She's learning that different wines have different uses and flavors. I STILL taste the alcohol, and so does she, but your palate learns to "ignore" it for the other tastes.

I think that it is something that you can learn over time. My wife and I have been drinking more wine and less beer for the last few years. Recently, we had an "a ha" experience where we actually tasted the fruits we were supposed to.

So the answer to your question is yes you can learn. You just need to practice.

Yes, its like you think. It takes a while to learn how to taste the other tastes through the off putting taste of alcohol.

It's an acquired taste, and wine isn't something you gulp down, you taste it over and over again!
