My friend and I have been looking for fun and where told that the larger they are the more expensive they are cause they are rarer and they are harder to get in any type of good quality. If you want the look of a big stone get a ring that has a group of like four stones in the center but will look like one. It will be cheaper and you can get better quality stones. Talk with a jeweler they will be able to advice you.

First, if you are watching the expense go with better quality and smaller instead of poor quality and bigger. You can always swap the diamond for something bigger in the future if you want to.
Next, remember that this whole thing is about the MARRIAGE and not the jewelry. Personally, I would have married my husband and been just as happy without a ring at all. HE was what I wanted, not the ring. If you're putting all the focus on the size of the rock, perhaps you're not thinking enough about the meaning of the ring and should give it some more thought before taking the vows.

My personal minimums on a diamond are
Cut - Good and Up
Color - H and Up
Clarity - VVS2 and Up
Just my personal preferences. I think that for me, those minimums are good enough to not take from the appearance of the diamond.
Also, after trying on some rings, I think that anything over 1.5 ct would be WAY too big. I even thought that the 1ct that I tried on was too big. I tried on a half and a 3/4 and I thought that they suited my finger well. I know that sounds small if you don't know much about diamonds (which I don't), but like I said, after trying them on, it looks a whole lot larger than what one might think.

You can't get a good, cheap 4 ct diamond. I suggest you reduce the ct. and go smaller, but better quality...like near flawless clarity and at least a "C" color. It's an investment, so I suggest to not get the cheap big diamond b/c as the years go by, it will not hold it's value as well as a diamond with better clarity and color.

4 ct is a big but NOT cheap diamond. At 4 ct it won't matter on color and clairity that size will speak for itself. Good luck.

You can get a big diamond but know that if you want it cheap, it is going to have really bad quality. I'd rather something smaller but way good quality.

4 Carats? That's crazy big, and unnecessary! I would opt for something smaller, of a much better quality. My ring (I just got it last week) was 1 carat center, plus 8 smaller side stones, and it cost about $8000. I would go for quality over quantity. You're not going to get a ring of 4 carats for anything under $25,000, I would think.
