I have the opportunity to go to Shanghai from Ohio as an expatriate for 6 to 12 months. How can I find other Americans already living in Shanghai to chat with and even mingle with if I go there? I have lots of questions to ask

You can go to Xintiandi(新天地). That's a place where expats like to hang out.

There are many Americans living in Shanghai and they are spread out in Pudong or Puxi Area. A lot of Americans stays at the Shanghai Kerry Centre too. Go to the pubs and cafes as suggested by Jason S here...Malones is a good place to start. The food is great and the ambience is nice. A lot of foreigners goes there.

There is also an association for Americans working in Shanghai. Just check out the website ...www.cityweekend.com.cn
for anything related to living in Shanghai. All informations from shopping to dining to foot massage is listed there. You can even find many locals willing to be your friends on the website but be careful ....there are many cheats too. Just be cautious when you arrived and be street-smart.

Go to: Malones Restaurant, Moon River Diner, Sasha's Restaurant, or visit this website: www.shanghaiexpat.com.

6-12 months is not a long time. I have been here 7 years. I am just starting to understand that I understand nothing. :) If I could only know then what I know now.....

There are alot of Americans here. But we are spread out.

Read and introduce yourself. Ask the questions you need to ask and arrange to meet some of the folks on this board. They'll help you through the process.
