Hell is a horrible idea created by stupid humans. How else are the governments of the world supposed to keep us in line without the fear of a possible horrible afterlife.

What I can't figure out is why hell is even necessary. The religionists try to tell us (repeatedly and at great length) that everything happens according to their god's "plan." If they accept this as an absolute truth, then it would follow that even the most evil people on the planet are following the "plan," and therefore should be immune from punishment. Their gods apparently allow great evil to occur, and few ever receive just punishment for their evil, so it must follow it's all part of the "plan." So why should we have to worry about hell? Aren't we all just doing what the gods want? I've never been given a satisfactory answer to this apparent contradiction.

I can tell you that Judaism doesn't believe in a Hell in the sense that most christian sects do. In Jewish philosophy, hell is a temporary place were your soul is cleansed such that you become worthy of the more pleasant aspects of the afterlife.

That is the place I am looking forward to going. Let us look at it for the following reasons:
1. The Devil encouraged Adam and Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, but God did not want them to gain that knowledge. It is not logical for something that is pure evil the Devil (supposedly) to want to give out that knowledge which would expose him. The one that is truly evil would not want that knowledge out, so who did not want the knowledge out there? You can answer that on your own.
2. From a marketing point of view, you name something where you want people to go a nice name and somewhere where you do not a terrible name. Hence with the naming of Iceland and Greenland, the story on that was that whomever founded Greenland wanted people to go there and not Iceland (claimed by different government) and hence Greenland (which is an ice waste land) is given a nicer name and Iceland (where the women are amazing) a terrible name. But Iceland is way nicer.
3. The Devil was kicked out of heaven because he wanted to become more equal to God and God certainly could not handle that. God obviously exhibited emotion in not wanting Satan to give that power away. So Satan was banished from heaven and created hell (well that goes against God creating everything, but go with me on this one) to rule over. So Satan hates God and wants to undermine God at all steps. So when God banishes you to hell, what motivation does Satan have to do anything of what God wants him to do? Once again not making logical sense, Satan chances are would not do anything for God, in fact just the opposite.
So, if I believe in a heaven and in a hell, then hell is the place that I want to go, since hell logically would be nicer. God is a selfish entity who wants it all for himself and I would hedge my bet that Satan would do nothing that God wants, like punishing someone for eternity. Also, God sounds like a jerk to punish someone for all eternity for using their freewill, seems once again God being childish. However, since I do not believe in heaven or God, then hell (no matter how much fun it sounds) would also be on the chopping block.
