police scanner?

I have a police scanner model PRO-91 (radio shack) says it is 800 MHz, I was woundering what is the range in feet or mile of how far it should pick up? and is there any CHEAP way of using the same anttena and making it pick up signals farther away?

You could attach a Wire to the Ariel (4 Feet Lengths), support this between trees or suspend through a washing line.
This should improve the reception.
The Reception Will be affected by Buildings,Atmospherics and General Static Electricity(i.e Car Ignition,Cell phones and other Transmitting devices).
