I have an 11 week old shih-tzu puppy and she just started chewing on the walls and furniture legs in the past week or so. I'm not haveing luck getting her to stop. Is there something i can put on the things she chews to deter her? Or any other suggestions?

Your puppy is starting to teeth. Chewing makes it feel better. Everytime she is chewing on something she is not supposed to, say firmly "no" and offer her a chewy toy. Get toys of different textures too.

A few suggestions:
1. Bitter Apple - you can get it at almost any pet supply store. Spray it on items you don't want her to chew. It tastes terrible!
2. Bitter Yuck - worse than Bitter Apple, but the same idea.
3. Mix vinegar and pepper together and spray it on things you don't want her to chew.
All of these products are completely safe - they just taste really bad.

If she's only 11 weeks old she's probably teething. Get her some nice chew toys and maybe a couple of rawhide bones - things that she is allowed to chew all she wants! When you catch her chewing something she's not supposed to chew, tell her "no" and give her one of her toys to play with. Also spray the object with whatever nasty-tasting mixture you choose as soon as you can. If she tries to bite it again, she'll find that it tastes really bad.

Have patience - this will pass!

because your puppy is a baby she is probably teething and needs stuff to chew on what is happening when she is teething her puppy teeth are coming Thu the gum line and it is sore to her so by chewing it helps relieve the pain as the the teeth come tru. it can also be boredom puppies chew when are bored it can also be for attention. or just curious about the what this i can put my mouth on this. but in general puppies chew on everything in sight because they don't know any better. so you have to teach them. an that's were you need to get some help either from a dog trainer or some people from a pet store that sells toys like pet smart pr pet core hope this helps and good luck.

Is your pup crate trained? Do you use the crate properly (ie: do you use it for only short periods and NOT for punishment?) If you answer yes to properly using the crate, then I suggest that you continue to use it as a routine. (Routine goes like this: pup in crate for rest time, pup out for eliminationg time, pup plays and exercises, pup back in crate for rest time..and so on). The crate, WHEN USED CORRECTLY will be every puppy owner's best friend.

If no crate, you can tether your pup to your belt loop so that your pup is by your side all the time (ie: he/she won't be chewing away at your wallpaper, carpet or furniture).

Provide your pup with lots of fun, puppy safe chew toys (ie: nothing that he/she could break into small pieces). You can use the Kong with Peanut butter to occupy the pup. You could also place his/her chew toys in the freezer to help with the discomfort of teething.

Oh, and there's the spray that tastes yucky! I found that my dogs liked the bitter apple taste, but turned their noses to some other products (see pet store for your choices).

If you catch pup in the act of naughty behavior, use a strong, bark-like "no." I strived to startle my pups...it works. Also, there's the shake cans, spray bottle method, and the 'grab at the nap of the neck and shake lightly' (like mom dog would do to her pups).

My FAVORITE all time puppy raising book is written by the Monks of Newskeet (Sp?) "How to Raise a Puppy"

Good luck. Keep a close on your little guy/girl!

Most pet stores carry different kinds of spray, like Bitter Apple, to keep puppies from chewing on things they're not supposed to. Good luck!

There are a couple of products that are suppose to prevent dogs from chewing on things like furniture. Also, you may want to get her chew toys so she will have something to chew on. more than likely she is teething.

Use bitter apple or bitter yuck. One is oil based and the other is water based. The oil based is better for wood and walls (I think that one was the bitter yuck but not sure should say on bottle) they both work great on anything. Water based would be for cloth like the material on the couch if she chews at t he armrests or something

Puppies chew for about a year and a half. If you leave them alone often, the more they chew. Maybe you can confine the dog to a "chew friendly" room, or outside a lot.

well go to ur local pet store and get this spray its like a sour apple spray.... spray it on everything she chews on and it will leave a really bad taste in her mouth when she chews. So its safe but it will save ur walls and furniture... good luck
