I want to make my home scale show lower actual weights. It has a digital read-out and is battery operated. Please help !!! Important to modify it temporarily (even permanently -- it doesnt matter -- it is cheap scale.) Thanks !!!

A lot of cheap scales use the same basic mechanism as the analog scales. Instead of a disk with the numbers on, viewed through a little window, the disk is made with a ring of holes or slots which are counted by the electronics as they go past a little light.

If you block up a slot or two with a bit of tape, they don't get counted and the read out is lower.

The indicated weight will be the sum of a tare weight with the product of the actual weight times a constant, which the manufacturer will try to get to be as close to 1 as possible. You may be able to modify the tare by adding or subtracting weight on the pan, but you will not be able to modify the constant -- that's built into the electronics. So, just put a cheap calculator next to the scale, and do a bit of arithmetic.

Turn the scale over. Take out the four screws that hold the two covers together (top and bottom). Remove the electronic board and replace chip # IC1 with a decade chip that will divide the weight reading by ten. Put it back together. If this doesnt work, put the original chip back in, then put a piece of red tape over the display and write (in black marker) the number that you would like to see on the read out.
