you can read the bible a hundred different ways and come to a hundred different conclusions, which is proof enough for me to say that it is definately false.

This isn't saying to hit your child with a rod. It is saying that it's the duty of the parent to teach their children about God. If a parent doesn't teach their child, then the child will lack wisdom and will lead a sinful life, thus thus shaming their mother. The Lord gives wisdom to the man, the man gives this wisdom to his wife and the wife passes the wisdom on to their children.
If reference to the rod, the rod doesn't literally mean hitting with a stick or an object. The rod means a parent is to be serious when it comes to scripture and the parent has authority over the children and the children are to honor their parents.
The problem that people have that don't study the BIble is that they read a few verses and interpret them all on their own and don't fully understand the true message. If you read this one verse and know nothing about the rest of the BIble, then you will think that a parent is to beat their child until the child "gets it". But a person that follows the Bible studies the Bible in it's entirety and doesn't study it on their own. You need to read what Biblical scholars have said and read what the Church has to say.
The Bible tells us things that we should already know, it's common sense. Love the Lord your God, love yourself, love your family and friends, and love your neighbors and enemies. Love does not mean to tolerate their sinful ways, but to correct them when you see them living in sin. And to always watch yourself.

Proverbs 29:15 does NOT say, "thou shalt beat your children with a rod"
It is a strong suggestion that corporal punishment of children gives wisdom (moral character), and suggests what happens if you don't use corporal punishment.
I would suggest that the verse is true by virtue of what we see in society, today. Incidence of juvenille delicquency have been on the rise since I have been alive, because why? ohhhh, we shouldn't spank our kids, noooooo.

I am a Christian...I actually know some so called Christians that tried to use that scripture in a court of law on child abuse charges.
No...I do not follow every thing the Bible tells me...but I do follow every thing God tells me.
Seems this morning that is the Christian war, lol....is it God...or is it the Bible. It is so easy for some to slip into worshiping or idolizing the Bible and forget about God all together.

Okay, now that all of you have had your fun mocking and criticizing Christians, I hope you all are nice and smug.
You atheists criticize Christians for being judgmental, but I find more judging being done by non believers than any Christian I have ever known.
In answer to your question: I do my best in following the Word. The term "rod" is referred to the staff the shepherds used to gently guide the sheep to go in the direction he wanted them to go.
So, to interpret Proverbs 29:15:
"Gently guide and correct your children for they will grow wise, but if you don't guide, teach, correct and LOVE your child, he/she could grow up to bring shame to his/her mother by not being a person of integrity, a person of prosperity, and a person who loves others."

You can sure take things our of context. That dose not say to beat your child. Its says that if they do something wrong you should discipline them not to ignore it and let them do whatever they want.
I do try to do everything the Bible says. Contextually. and no I am not able to. I try though.
I will tell you where I stand on "spare the rod, spoil the child". If my kids are doing something life threatening then I will probably give them a spanking (sticking something in electrical sockets, running out in the street...)

the international is a less than perfect place... and this too applies to Christians. i think of there is this false impression that in basic terms because of fact somebody is a Christian they're "suited" and infallible. it extremely is of course no longer the case. There additionally are many distinctive stages of Christians... you already know the Easter and yuletide kinds that ensue out of a few sort of ethical criminal accountability after which there are people who supply it lots larger magnitude of their day after day lives. The "cafeteria Christians" are people who p.c.. and choose the bits that artwork for them quite than accepting it as an entire. Christianity isn't a self-wide-unfold faith and that i think quite a few human beings omit that fact.

Prov. 22:16
Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a child; the rod of correction will drive it far from him
We are not talking about beating children to death- but that bad decisions have consequences. Instead of discipline we have chemically neutered children in our schools.

It doesn't say anything about beating. Child discipline should be done in a responsible manner when you are in total control of the situation. If you think about it, ever since people have decided to not spank---- children have become spoiled, and defiant with no sense of respect for authority--instead they are informed enough by our public school systems to cry child abuse and threaten the parents to drop a dime on 'em. Discipline and respect start with toddler age children and when parenting is done with love, compassion and the Word of God--by the time they are teenagers they have the utmost respect for those who are put in authority over them. God does not want you to beat your children!

I wished I could say I follow EVERYTHING the Bible told me. But, I can't. As far as the verse you are talking about. It simply is telling us to strongly discipline our children. Not to beat them up. If a parent is a strong disciplinary, he/she won't let the child rule them, like so many parents are doing today. They will respect authority and listen to their elders.
