I have 2 cats. They are sisters and about a year old. If we accidently leave the bathroom door open then one of them will poo in the sink. Sometimes they just wee. The cat litter tray is very clean and they also get let outside a lot. Why are they doing this? Are they copying us going to the toilet? Why are they not bothered about covering it over like they do in the litter tray? I have had cats all my life and have never encountered this before. Any ideas?

One of my girl cats saw me using the toilet one day, and ever since then I have to make sure I keep the bathroom door closed all the time or she uses the spot between the toilet and the wall as her toileting spot! She also has a clean litter tray. So I reckon copying could be part of it! If you could persuade her to move across to the toilet instead I know that some people have trained their cat to use the loo!

I should imagine that she can't cover it over if she does it in the sink - not much litter there. But she probably tries - if you can watch her when she does it she probably does paw the sink but the sink porcelain isn't exactly litter!

BTW my girl does try to cover her poop, but she doesn't like getting her feet dirty in cat litter. So she "paws" the plastic side of the litter tray instead of the litter, (lots if she's been super smelly), and the poop still lies on top of the litter.

Not sure I have the answer but when I was getting ready for bed the other night and about to clean my teeth my Maine Coon cat, Marlon, jumped in to the sink and had a wee right in front of me! It's the first time he's ever done that (he's about 5) and was careful to position himself right over the plug hole so it was a very neat exercise!
We have 2 other cats and at this time of year always keep a clean litter tray down (they're all abit wet and don't like going outside when the weathers nasty!).
I've got no idea why he did this so can't really help - the only thing I can think is like yourself and the other answerer here suggested it's kind of copycat behaviour. I'll be interested to see if anyone comes up with any reasons!
