Why does someone become a doctor or a teacher? To make a difference. To stand up for our country. To be there for people to turn to in times of need. Yes, there are financial reasons but I have found more are joining because they believe in the values our military upholds than the actual financial benefits. They believe this country is worth standing up for.

I have been a Army National Guardsman in CA for the last 6 years and just re-enlisted for another 6.
Personally, I LOVE the guard. I have a lot of pride in being a Guardsman as we are the nation’s oldest fighting force (formed from the Minutemen of the revolution).
The reason I joined the Guard as opposed to Active Duty Army is that I wanted to serve not just my country when called, but serve the community in which I live when they need me.
When your town is flooding and you are trapped...we are there for you
When you are snowed in and can’t get food or water...we are there for you
When an earthquake hits and you are trapped...we are there to pull you out
And when the country calls for us to fight...we are there for our nation.

I joined to honor my country, plain and simple.
I took a big paycut to do so, but i love the army. I have seen the world, made many friends and feel it is my duty to serve. I have been to Iraq and Afghanistan, lost friends, but never doubted my enlistment, not even for a minute. To many, honor is a word that doesnt mean anything. To us, in the military, it is how we live everyday.

One of two reasons:
1. They may feel that they don't have much going for them in life, so they enlist in the army to do something with their lives, and even receive an education.
2. To fight for our country. Many people enlisted after September 11th.

I joined because I wanted to continue a long patriotic family tradition. It was something I always wanted to do. I never regretted that decision.

Boredom. To escape an unpleasant life. For adventure. To earn money. For security - you`ve always got 3 meals a day and a place to sleep. Because their family has a tradition with the military. And a few, very few, who want to fight and kill.
