All piercings hurt but how bad depends on your tolerance to pain. Usually the piercing process itself isn't bad because its done and over with very quickly, its the fact the area is sore and swollen for the next week or so that makes it bad.
As far as numbing, no reputable piercer will ever use a numbing cream or injected anesthetic. Its simply not needed. Also you have to remember that odd amounts or types of pain are an indication that something COULD be wrong, if you are numb, you won't be able to tell if something is wrong until its too late. And my honest opinion if you feel you won't be able to handle the pain, no offense, don't get the piercing.
As far as tongue piercings go, its going to swell after and you'll have to readjust to eating and talking. And there is a high risk of oral damage which is definitely not attractive or good. This piercing heals rather quickly (usually 4-6 weeks) and its easy to keep clean and take care of.
Nipple piercings are a very different story. They can stay sore for more than a month and can take well over a year to heal. If not done with proper sized jewelry and at a proper depth, healing can even be near impossible. Its very, very important that you go to an experienced and reputable piercer to have them done and you need to take care of them. That means following all advice and aftercare given to you by the piercer and if you have any doubts about something, you should go back to them asap!
I love my nipple piercings a lot. If you have questions, feel free to ask me or go visit your local piercer and chat with them about your questions and concerns. Good luck.

I got my tongue pierced a long time ago, and you really can't numb it sorry!!! But they make you rinse for a while with Listerine and it will kind of numb it for just a little while. I didn't think it really hurt to get it pierced, it seemed like it hurts worse to bite your tongue that to pierce it. The worst part is the swelling and healing after ward. My tongue oozed this cream color discharge and I freaked because I thought it was infected but they said it was normal, and FYI it never got infected. But it always rubbed either my roof or under my tongue raw, and I couldn't go down a gage or up, so now I have scar tissue under my tongue from having it pierced. But I did enjoy it while I had it and it wasn't driving me crazy. Beware if you are eating take small bites because you can't tell where the barbell is and you will chomp on it, and it really hurts when you do that!!!! Don't wear all metal barbells (balls) after it heals and you can change barbells get the ones with acrylic balls, this way you don't chip any teeth. Good Luck!!!!!!

Of course it hurts, so do your nipples but the thing about your tongue is it swells so big that it fills your mouth and you can count your teeth by looking at the indentions on your tongue, so it makes eating very difficult. And it makes it easy to bite your tongue, mine was swolen for three days and I ate applesauce and ice cream for my meals. The swelling will go down and it will be a little sore but the pain goes away within a week and you should be fine. The nipples hurt like hell but at least they didn't swell, I didn't numb either, I hate ice more then the pain of piercings. Good luck, hope this helps a little :)

I had my tongue pierced and it didn't hurt at all, and I can't take pain at all. I guess it depends on the person. You can try sucking on ice to diminish any pain and swelling. Tongue piercings heal fast and are relatively low maintenance. Nipple piercings hurt like a ***** and they can take 6mo-2YEARS to heal. It's not just a simple hole, but a flesh wound and is very susceptible to infection or rejection. Either way, do your homework to determine which piercing is best for you.

My 2 sisters have tongue piercings, nipple rings and clitoral hood piercings. I've witnessed them all. They use forceps to hold your tongue in place and just push it through real fast. They went to Ink-Slingers a well known place. They said they really don't offer any numbing things except ice but my sister ate slushies for two days to keep the swelling down and had to rinse her mouth out constantly with listerine because it would coat. As for nipple rings, it bled a little but she said they were VERY sensitive and would hurt like hell in the cold. But now she enjoys them but it's hard to cover them when you really need to (job interview)

I know a few people who have tongue piercings, and everyone has said that it doesn't really hurt that bad. Nipple piercings hurt worse than a tongue piercing, and it's pretty trashy anyways.

It doesn't hurt much. you'll feel a little ache on the tongue for the next week or so after piercing (healing time depends on individual). the troublesome part would be the aftercare and eating. it will feel like a poke when the needle goes through but nothing unbearable. i think it also depends on the piercer. my piercer was very meticulous and gentle when doing my piercing. do go to a piercer if you have any questions. if he/she doesn't give you the confidence to do it, go to another one. go for a reputable one. we're talking about a tongue here mind you. i've had a friend who did his and bled non-stop. had to go to the hospital

I dont think it hurts at the time of the piercing. Butit does hurt for a couple of days afterward. And the swelling is a bit of a pain. But once it goes down all is good.

Not really. I've had mine pierced twice. The last time wasn't as bad as the first. Take a Motrin before u git it done. Drink frozen alcoholic drinks afterwards. Those two things will help wit the swelling.

it hurts way more to bite your tongue than to pierce it. I'm a pussy and hate pain and i have mine done, all you feel is the pressure, then it gets warm, then you feel it throb almost like you can feel your heartbeat in your tongue, it hurst the day after or the next day, that's when it feels like someone stabbed you in the mouth with an elephant tusk.
