I am a recovering pack rat... I fall off the wagon every now and then LOL

I have a 3 ring binder with 5 folders. Each folder has a week of lesson work in it..( I plan 4-5 weeks ahead) We have stacking organizers 1 for each child.. their completed/ or working on sheets go in them.. I pull out all finished work on Friday ( or saturday, or sunday LOL) I grade and I scan some of it onto our homeschool blog.. Then they are put into color coded folders ( the paper ones with the fasteners). They are sorted by subject.. red math, yellow spelling etc.. The childs name is written on the cover.. Once filled- either at the end of workbook or subject(s) and put into a storage box..

Our other daily supplies pencils, erasers, crayons etc. are put in the little storage boxes with drawers.. Lareger supplies are put into larger clear plastic storage ( the kind used for crafts)..

Organization is a must for me.. I have alot of little ones.. I have a rule.. the school work is to be put in the organizer.. If its put on my desk and its lost. it must be done over.. My oldest learned that this week when he had to redo his vocabulary paper..

text books and work books go in the milk crates.. they are sturdy and stack easily next to our bookshelf. I have our blank papers also sorted in the organizers, white lined, printer, construction etc.. I also get my printer paper predrilled with 3 hole punch to make it easier for organizing worksheets.. Office supply stores will also pre drill workbooks...

Hope it helps

There are so many different ways to sort, I totally understand where you've coming from. I struggle with this constantly but know that I need to come up with something workable so I stop being so frustrated!

Here are things I've been thinking about doing:
*labelling my shelves so that certain subject materials have an official place to be
*labelling all of my binders
*having a binder per child to put all those paper that need to be kept for records or what have you
*have one afternoon a week, or a short time each day, set aside to take care of all the homeschooling paper work--actually, the idea of having a bit of time each day, kind of like a school teacher does when the kids are gone, might work for me rather well if I can pick a time and have my watch remind me :) Would something like this work for you?
*definitely, at the end of each year, go through all the old stuff and see what you can chuck

Now, for sorting, in general, it's probably best to go by subject. If it's kids' completed (or in-progress) work, it should be a set of folders or a binder all to itself (with subject dividers, just like we had in school). But when doing the initial sort, think Keep, Give Away (Sell) or Chuck. Then you can organize the keep stuff further.

Good luck--I'm discouraged right now with my own cluttered school stuff so I totally relate!!

One) I am not stalking you! That seems to be the norm with you, I just think you are an unclassy mother with a classical education minded curriculum (I got that from your blog, which I read all the time; wait, maybe I AM stalking you!). Have you SEEN my computer area? I know you have because you stalk me by actually having the nerve to come to my house! LOL. I say as long as you can find it, all is well. And if you can't, you can always blame it on a kid til you do. I vote for your youngest; she looks wily enough to do it . I start out the year with everything in its place and a place for everything. Within 3 weeks of having to grade papers and tests, pull out worksheets, and books for reading I find that it turns out messy and I just roll with it. I am sure the system you have is fine, just don't worry.

In our room, we have several hanging files in rubbermaid bins, every child has their own file. Every one has their own magazine holder (you know, for shelves?) that has folders with their work in it. When they do their work, they put it back in, and when I grade it, I put it into their hanging file. They also put craft stuff in there, any special drawings that they are proud of. We also have a large rubbermaid bin for each child that holds hanging folders, they have a file for each year. Those are in the top of our closet so they aren't really available for daily use. Every few months I go through the smaller files, and purge most of the stuff. Items that are important to the child, or that I think particularly reflects a major step in learning, are put into that years hanging file. It starts from birth and has all their hospital stuff, baby announcements bday cards in each year as well.

When I buy stuff in advance, I have plastic drawers (the small 9x12 inch rubbermaid drawers, with three drawers?) that has a drawer for each child to hold workbooks and papers. We also have two more sets that has a drawer for markers, for pens, for pencils, for scissors, for glue bottles and glue sticks, and one for dry erase markers for the white board. We have two book shelves in our room, one for manuals and texts, and one for kids references, their text books, large workbooks. If you want to email me under the QA section, i can send you a link to some pictures of our room.

I love to be organized though, and that helps!

some colleges grant pupil planners/calendars. You write your homework down in it for each and each elegance. Then on the end of the day be sure your planner and then confirm you will have all the factors you will have have been given to entire your assignments or initiatives. like the different person mentioned have a homework folder in which you would be waiting to located on of the homework sheets in it.
