we're cleaning out folders today, i guess you can call it spring cleaning. when i was a teen in public school the school would have a spring cleaning day, where we'd throw out old work from the first semester. do any of you hang on to their work? besides their history work (we do the classical education) i cant see a reason to hang on to this stuff.

It depends on what it is.

If it's math facts sheets or stuff like that, yeah, I chuck it.

If it's writing, I'll keep a few dated samples. It's nice to be able to look back and see the progression.

We go through stuff usually at least once a school year, usually near the end.

It depends on the state in which you live. In SC, we have to save some samples of the student's work. They don't say how much, just to be able to show the government officials that may come knocking at our door at any time that we are indeed homeschooling and not just letting our child run the streets during the school day. I save a few tests from each semester. And not just the good ones, I also save some of the ones with lower or failing grades, too.

I use the A Beka program and I use the boxes for the newer curriculum to put all their schoolwork from previous year into it to save. I have extra folders for them so that they can clear out their "work" folders monthly. I actually threw out 1 school year and I felt bad after I hauled it to the curb and couldn't get it back after it went into the trash truck. The boxes are now in a garage back in my hometown and in the garage here in our new city. Good luck.

Hey there, my mother is a home educator of 20 years, and she says that she has kept all of the work of three children until they have passed their college entrance exams. She still keeps some of it just for sentimental value. It actually takes up most of our attic today! :)

I keep a sampling of work from each year and toss the rest.

Oh, and do not assume the only ones who homeschool are Moms! I share the job with my DH, since I work part time as a chemist!

since I live in a state that is unregulated I let my son choose what is kept and what is thrown out. Most of the time w/s he trashes as soon as he understands a concept and has tested on it and passed. Most of the stuff he keeps is his original stories and poems that he wrote using his spelling words

We send most of it to Grandma in WI. She appreciates being kept in the loop, and I don't have to deal with excess paper.
