My daughter has gotten out of control over the last two years. She comes and goes as she pleases, goes to school when it suits her, runs away if I ground her, and has now begun to yell curse words at her step-father and younger brother. She refuses to cooperate and I've had it. I told her that if she thinks she can survive like this she should just go. I think the tough love approach is what I need to do. I know that she would just go live with friends but want to know if I can get in legal trouble

Wow...thank you all who have responded...the good, the bad, and the ugly. The good news is that I have two other children who are top of their class and are doing well. So, I guess that means I've done something right as a mom. The daughter in question is in counceling (thank you for those who were distressed about this hopefully you will have peace of mind now). And, in case you thought she is suffering at all she is currently residing with her boyfriend and family. Bottom line I guess is that I will wait out the next year and then wish her well. Hopefully she will realize life is not handed to you...you have to earn your way. Thanks again for all your kind (and not so kind) answers!

Nope. You can't.
And yes, you can get into a lot of trouble.
Take her to counseling.

Do you realize that this is your daughter you are talking about? You need to try and help her not push her away. I understand you are frustrated and to the point you want to just give up, but that will only do more harm. I have a niece that is 16 and has already been to prison. Her mother also pushed her away and she just ended up getting into more and more trouble. When my sister finally welcomed her back and tried to get her some help that is when she began to settle down.
Look all I'm saying is remember that this your child and welll....don't give up on her so easily.
And also if you kick her out and she gets into some kind of legal trouble your her mother and that WILL go back to you(fines, court fees. ect ect...)

17 and how many months, closer to her 18th the better. At her age I doubt you'd have any problems shes not a child and quickly aging out of the system. It's to late you should have dealt with it harsher 2 yrs age now that shes grown it will have to be up to her to change. I think alot of people posting do not realize because of age there is not much anyone can do with 17yr olds rapoidly approaching 18 and the 17 yr olds know it.

Yes you can kick her out but if the police pick her up and you didn't report her as a run away, you might get in trouble. I say call the local police station and see if there is a way to have her removed so there would be no legal hassle!! GOOD LUCK...My brother went out of control and my mom kicked him out at 17... luckly his freinds parents let him live there and he has actually shaped up.

No. dont do that.
It is your mistake.
Who will accept at the age of 17 years-regarding step-father.
When you are having teenage children is it necessary to mary another person.
Kindly you do one thing. Immediately you put her in residental institution.

No. But you can report her to the authorities which may scare the heck out of her. You should have taken control when she was seven, to late at seventeen.

number one ur bi*ch Asz mother
okay being a teen in this world is very hard
and having a step dad doesnt make it any easier..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
why should you care if she yells at him thats not her real dad
and your only caring about leagel trouble thn caring about how she can get in troubly if she gets kicked out
ovouisly she's having issuses you need to sit down and tlk to her lke a real MOTHER, your the worst mom there is.
and it gets me mad that all you care about is gettin in trouble, you just care about your self that pisses me offf. you should never ever give up on ur daughter she's all you have she's way more inportant thn the stepdad.

I believe Cali is one of those states where it is illegal to lock out a minor. Your best bet is to try to have her locked up at a facility for out of control teens until she is 18 then she's on her own.
