On the table are two job offers.

One is in San Francisco where the cost of living is high, there will be a substantial commute, and the pay will be good, but somewhat less than the other offer. The Bay is a new adventure, has temperate weather, nearby beaches, fresher air, etc.

The other is in Wilmington, DE where the cost of living is reasonable, the commute to work is fairly short, and the pay is somewhat more than the SF job. Wilmington is a smaller town, not a lot going on, full range of seasonal weather.

The work is similar in both locations. Long hours, semi-stressful professional job.

So...what would YOU choose, and why?

Just to clarify...the reason I posted this in "mental health" is because this decision is making me crazy!

I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to answer this question.

You are lucky to be in a position of choosing.

Personally, I would go with Wilmington DE. Why? Weather, communte is shorter, and you have the opportunity to get to NY fairly quickly (which is a way better city than San Fran). Additionally, you have all beaches along the east coast. You can take the ferry from DE to NJ and goto Altantic City for shows and gambling.

San Fran is nice, but expensive. Commuting in California SUCKS and will cause stress to increase more. San Francisco is very expensive and while it does offer arts and shows, there is ALOT of homelessness and poverty that exists because of the history associated with SF. Oh yeah, SF air is not fresher than DE, in fact it probably has more polluants because of the enormous amount of people living in California and commuting by car.

Of the top of my head I would go with Job number 2. Better pay, and a smaller town. I love a full range of seasons and the out door activity that comes along with that. And well when I was a few years younger I went to San Fran and I really wasn't impressed.

But that said, you should really try and search in your heart to see which is a better fit for you. Good luck with the jobs... I am sure either way you go, you will be happy!

You should weigh all the pro's and con's as you see them for each location. You shuld make sure that you pick the location that best suits you, you don't want to go through life regretting your decision. It sounds like you would be happier in SFO. Remember that once the novelty wears off you will be stuck.
My personal preferance would be Delaware, based on the fact that the cost of living is cheaper and if you want big city excitement you can travel to Philly, NYC, Washington or Baltimore relatively quickly and leave at will. I would prefer to put more of my income away for a rainy day and be able to do what I want when I want vs. having to save for weekend get aways once in a while.

I would chose Delaware because I love seasons. I appreciate each season more because I get to "miss" summer or winter. It's exciting and fresh to start a new season. Plus, with a stressful job, you won't be out living the high life most of the time.

Realistically, you'll be going to work, working your butt off, coming home and eating dinner! If you work in DE, you'll have more money so you could save up for a really terrific vacation to San Fran. where you could seriously enjoy the sights and time away.

No matter where you live, you'll make it fun, you'll make it home, you'll make the most of it....or not.

I would go to San Francisco (although I find it impossible for any opinion on this to be unbiased).

I have been living in a small town all my life and I'd love to see California anyway. The beach sounds wonderful; it'd be good for my depression. And as for pay, I don't care as long as I have food, shelter, and a little bit for fun.

I'd pick DE because I hate to commute. But how the hell is this a mental health question?
