Not all Christians believe that everyone who fails to be "born again" will go to hell. For that matter, not all Christians believe in a separate spiritual reality called "hell." As for me, I believe that God is the source of all that is good. Those who strive to do what is good (such as the Buddhas) are following God's call, regardless of whether they subscribe to Christian doctrinal beliefs. As such, it is my belief that they end up in communion with God after death.

Are you asking if it is unfair that he didn't have an opportunity to learn the Scriptures? Its a shame, I quess - but as far as death goes, he will have the same 1000 year period of teaching when Christ returns as everyone else will have. Nobody will be thrown into hell without having the opportunity to see and learn the truth. Nobody. God is not unfair, even if many people may be. He'll be in good hands.

The Catholic church believes in an all-loving and merciful God. How could such a God damn those who have never even HEARD of Jesus? So the Catholic church's teaching is that salvation is up to God and since God is love and mercy, God will handle those who have never had a chance to even hear of Jesus. Can they go to heaven? Catholics believe that it is a possibility and that it is up to God.

God "winks" at the lack of knowledge of the people you describe. He is a fair and just God and will do them right. They will be judged according to their works based on their knowledge of Him just as you and I will.

According to the bible God is giving pardons to people who seek it earnestly. You wouldn't be mad at a judge who didn't give a pardon to someone on their way to prison, right?
