I am told it is impossible to ever be perfect, yet we should try to achieve it.

Why? Because imperfection (doing sins & other dirty stuff makes us unhappy)

If this is so, being we can never reach perfection, we can never be perfectly happy either, so I am thinking of giving up and not trying?

Not because I can't do better than anyone else who has ever tried if I try hard enough and spend enough time, but why wast my time trying to do something that is impossible and still leaves me unhappy?

Why indeed? No wonder people are awash in depression. Who started this dogma mess? Christians? Islamists?

Jesus said to. "Be ye perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect."

Striving to be perfect is likely to end you up either severely anxious, obsessed or very, very depressed. We cannot be perfect. For one thing...look at these poor pathetic people...they cannot even decide what perfect is. We cannot become Jesus...not now or here. It is better to be humble. Sometimes sin does make us unhappy...obviously not often enough.

Aside from sin, which we all do....you can try to be perfect if you want, but my experience is...in the end, you will lose everyone and everything you care about.

It is the works program.
To try to accomplish what can not be done is an exercise in futility.
It will wear you out and make you crazy.
It fosters great unhappiness.
You have to accept yourself for who you are.

I for one get aggravated at someone who is insisting I be perfect. Do tell me, do it yourself. If this perfect dogma is a correct way of looking at it, and you strive and strive--you never achieve it--you have waisted a lot of the valuable time that was given to you on nothing.

Perfection does not provide happiness. Jesus does. When you have a relationship with the Lord you have a joy that is sometimes hard to describe. Living for Christ is also knowing that you will never have a sinless day--it's impossible for man--but if we live each day in the will of God, we know what we are guaranteed for eternity. Depression is certainly not part of my vocabulary--because I have a Savior who sticks closer than a brother--a Savior who turns my mourning into dancing--a Savior that I love and strive to know more everyday--through His Word.

"I am told it is impossible to ever be perfect, yet we should try to achieve it."

Whether or not the goal is achieved is not as important as the trip itself. It is a worthy trip.

I can't see how a Christian would say it is impossible to ever be perfect...when Jesus himself said "be perfect." Obviously if He said it...it must be possible.

As for me, I choose to go for the ideals. I have learned much and understood more since starting the journey.

It is a fun and rewarding goal...if you don't beat yourself up every time for not meeting the goal. You have to roll with the falls. It is like learning to ride a bike...you don't beat yourself up every time you fall off. No, you laugh it off and jump back on the bike and try again. Eventually, you find you are riding the bike fine.

True Christians strive to be perfect because it was commanded by Christ.

Matthew 5:48 Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

And there is nothing wrong in obeying CHRIST.
What is wrong is not following the law.

Your problem is that you are reaching for the wrong thing, happiness. You assume that achieving perfection means you will be happy and that is untrue.

Happiness is an emotion, and as emotions go, it's an unreliable one. The achievement of perfection is only to please God, because He wants us to be perfect, not because it will make us happy.

Who says you can never, ever, in all of eternity be perfect? This life is short, but guess what, you got eons and eons after that to keep working on it.

It's not such an overwhelming or depressing goal when you give yourself an appropriate context of time to work on it.

If your goal is to be perfect then don't strive! Strive to be better than you are.
