If you have a CBR(as in a metal ring with a single ball in it) in your navel, it won't unscrew because the pressure of the jewelry holds the ball in place so it would be wise for you to have a piercer assist you in removing the ball so you don't hurt yourself. A certain type of pliers are needed to release some pressure so the ball will come out.
If its a curved barbell with a ball on each end (and you're just confused about names of jewelry), you might want to get a pair of latex gloves to help you get a better grip. Sometimes, the bottom ball (usually the one that sits inside the navel) is fixed in place so it may not move at all. So you'll want to try the other ball and make sure you're turning it the correct way. Furthermore, do not use standard pliers to get a better grip, you can scratch and damage the jewelry and if you aren't careful you can hurt yourself or the piercing.
If you are still having troubles, go to a local piercer and ask them for some help. They'll be more than happy to assist you if you have troubles. Good luck.

I had mine pierced with a ring, and also made the mistake of trying to unscrew it.
The ball pulls out. You might need small pliers or this. When you pull it out, you will see that the ball has dints on the top and bottom where the ring holds it in place.
You will need to hold the ring really tight and probably use pliers to grip the ball and pull it out.

you don't turn it. You have to pull the actual ring away from the ball on both sides. I thought the same thing when i got mine pierced and i felt like a complete retard going back to the place to have them take it out. They just pulled on the ring away from the ball and the ball just pops out!

i'm sure someone else already gave the right answer..but... you have to pull one side of the ring, and hold the other side still to let the ball loose.
"captive ball ring"...the two sides of the ring are pressing together ot keep the little ball in place....
