Most of the surfaces you are avoiding will not hurt you - the main sources of harmful germs are food that has been undercooked, left out too long, or improperly cleaned.

Remember, your immune system is like a very vigilant border collie — extremely attentive when put to the task, but if not given a task, it'll find some other trouble to get into.

In your body's case, your immune system can start over-reacting to agents that are not truly harmful — peanuts, berries, pollen, and other benign environmental agents.

Many scientists believe that the increasing rate of food and other allergens is due to an underworked immune system.

Although we haven't quite all descended into the sanitation madness of Howard Hughes, we have gone a little overboard in the routine use of antibacterial soaps and cleaners.

Luckily, no "super germs" have yet developed due to their use. But unless you work in health care, take care of an elderly or medically frail individual, or work with young children, routine use of antibacterials is unnecessary.

I don't touch my face when I'm in public and I keep my nails short.

There's no way to avoid germs completely. There're trillions of microbes living on our bodies. Only few would make you sick. You shouldn't be so worry. Few people know that there're more germs on our computer keyboards than on a public toilet seat. (Yeah! right where your fingers are right now!)

However, to avoid getting harmful viruses, the best thing to do it to avoid touching your own face. Don't worry about touching those public stuff unless you have broken skin. Our skin is very good defense. Just don't touch your face.

I also bring purell with me everywhere I go. I feel better about rubbing purell on my hands after touching the handles on supermarket carts then touching food.

There is no way to totally avoid germs. Germs are in the air but the precautions you take are good. You could carry a small bottle of that Hand sanitizier with you that you don't need water and you could wear a mask out in public but unless you have a known disease, I don't think I would do that

There's probably no way to avoid germs, but you could combat the ones you're exposed to. Keep some antibacterial hand wipers in your purse, and don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth unless you've used the wipers.

When I go out I always wear a paper bag with eye and mouth holes in anyway. My reason is because I tend to frighten people with my strange eye contact and the fact I stand really close to them and smile. But after reading this I may change my habit's and put a coffee filter on the paper bag with duct tape and not stand so close. I may also stop drawing on car windows with my tongue and proboscis.

At the health club use a towel on the machine seats and never touch your face until after washing hands. On cardio machines I wipe down the hand rails before using and use a towel to wipe my hands on.

Avoid touching things, avoid touching your face, and avoid contact with others, dont get in others faces. Always wash your hands after using a public bathroom and always wash your hands after you get home.*
