My cat loves black olives. I dropped one a time ago and she got ahold of it. She eats them and then goes crazy. She will attack peoples feet and whip her tail like she is nuts. She runs over to me now every time I open a can, what is in them that makes her so crazy. It is almost like cat nip for her.

My question is why do they make her so crazy, is there something in them?

My cat does the same, one time I left a plate on the end table that had olives in it, just the liquid was left but she smelled it and went crazy over it, I think it may have some of the cat-nip qualities and mine were green olives. I've had some of my friends say the same about cats loving the smell of olives, it wouldn't harm them so don't worry. now whenever I have olives with something I'll give her a little bit just for the scent and she's enjoying herself

I think this behavior is coming from the "hunter" in her. She has gotten hold of food and she is letting everyone else know that it is hers and to stay away.
I do not know of any any chemicals or toxins in olives that would cause this behavior.
Olives hold no nutritional value for cats, and since cats are carnivores, it could cause GI upset. Other than that, I have never heard of them being toxic.
I think it is simply a territorial thing.

Cats are hunters by nature and in the wild, they'd be catching their food. It's instinct. Cats like olives because they are high in fat and salt. They roll around and are small enough to mimick prey and taste good too, making them the perfect object to play-hunt with.

no there is nothing in them to make a cat really hyper. Mabey its the salt from the water where the olives are stored. Give your cat a olive after you wash it with water. then see if she reacts the same.
~I hope this helps

Maybe it's the juice stuff that's in them. Black olives contain more oil than green olives. Maybe he loves the juice and then goes crazzzy!

My cat had olive juice one time and she was acting completely intoxicated. She would roll and roll right off the furniture. Couldn't walk straight and all lovey dovey.

That is so cute!!!! I have a kitty named scarlett and she LOVES human food. she seriously will eat croutons, cheese, crackers, chips, potatoes, bread, yogurt...shes a little tubby too. my fiance says its because I always share my food with her, but its only a little bit. plus I cant help it, shes so cute and I give in. cats are weird sometimes. Im not exactly sure whats in a olive that makes your kitty go nuts, but sometime I will give my kitty one and see what happens. Good luck! and give your kitty a olive and record that. you'd win americas funniest home videos for sure!!!

My dog won't eat one, (he is a Chihuahua,) but he will growl over it, and won't let me take it away. He just carries it around. They must have a drug-like property, 'cause when I serve them, everyone eats them, like there aren't going to ever be any more!
