According to the Jif web site -- "In the first three months after opening, Jif doesn't require refrigeration. If your family doesn't gobble Jif up by then, you may want to refrigerate the peanut butter to help prevent flavor loss."
Most labels will tell you. If you buy natural, organic or make your own, then definitely refrigerate it. Let it warm up before trying to spread it.
Thanks for the question, it helped me as well! EW

If it's all-natural peanut butter (the only ingredient is peanuts), you need to put it in the fridge. Regular peanut butter doesn't need to go in the fridge. It should say on the jar.

If it is natural peanut butter, only has peanuts, salt, and water then you must. It will go rancid if you don't.
If it has fats in it, poly, mono etc then no you do not have to put it in the fridge.

I think it is really sad that the chemical spread in your pantry has been referred to as the REGULAR peanut butter.

Not unless it's natural peanut butter. Jif or Skippy kinds can be put in the cupboard.

I don't...anymore. It gets really cold and tears the bread when you try and make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Jelly, however, should go in the fridge =D

I never do. I believe peanut butter is non-perishable, so it is not necessary. But make sure you keep the jelly in the fridge!!!
