You can develop allergies to just about anything (food, pollens, metal, whatever) and it can be random when it happens. I've heard about and met people who are allergic to lots of types of metal and I know people who used to be okay with some kinds, but it changed over time. Lucky for me, I'm a resilient girl and haven't had problems yet....
The best thing to do for now is to discontinue use of that particular ring (obvious and I know it sucks to not wear it) and I usually suggest that you check to make sure the ring is high quality or at least what you thought it was. And make sure the area clears up, if it doesn't you should see a doctor and you could always get allergy tests done to see what else you should avoid. Sorry to hear about it Rider
Edit: Reading up on sterling silver, its only about 90-93% silver and does have traces of copper and other impure metals in it. It is possible that the amount of other materials is small to where its just now starting to wear down and irritate your skin. Though there is a chance that you have become allergic to silver as well, I strongly feel its the 7-10% of 'other' metals that is causing it.

Because of the watch allergy I am guessing your allergy is more toward nickel. Much of our sterling has nickel in it. Could it be that your ring is simply breaking down? Silver is not strong in itself.
My sister's allergy is so bad she has to put clear nail polish over the inside of her jeans snap! Nickel is in so much.

i am allergic to silver. but ive been allergic to it most of my life. i get the same itchyness, and the red bumps. it sucks. go with white gold if you like the silver look or switch to wearing gold. another thing is to make sure you get all the soap out from under the jewelry. i get the same reaction if i leave soap under my gold ring. ive found that some of the "fake" silver is ok, but its cheap and usually doesn't stay looking nice too long.

Yes Rider you can develop an allergy to pretty much any metal, I developed one to yellow gold so now I can't wear any yellow gold at all. You may try to switch to white gold it shouldn't bother you at all. Hope that helps, sucks you have to get rid of your favorite jewlrey though.

allergies can be developed for pretty much anything. i work with someone who got an infection and ever since then (15 years or so) she is allergic to all vegetables and fruit as well as flour made out of anything but rice. so i would say that you probably have developed an allergy.

yes, it's possible....I'm allergic to metal and can't even have my ears pierced ...even if they're 24kt gold. Didn't develop this allergy until several years after I got my ears pierced....that's why I was so hesitant on getting my tattoo originally...because of the natural metals present in the ink.

My wife is extremely allergic to anything other than 14k or higher gold, and surgical steel. Kind of an expensive affliction. Try taking to ring to a jeweler and have them steam clean it.
