AS a Navy Chief, I have to offer you some fair warning. If you plan on joining the Navy as a photographer.....please make surethat is what you have on your contract. The photographer rate is very competitive and hard to get in to.

As for school, yes, the Navy offers some very good college money and programs....but that is NOT a good reason to enlist by itself. You will have 8 years of obligation (even if you enlist for 4...you will have 4 more of reserves that you MUST fulfill). You will not be able to go to school full time until after that 4 or more years. Also, are photography courses offered at the local colleges near where you will be stationed? Not always.

I am not trying to talk you out of it, I am just saying that you have a lot of research to do...and alot of questions for your recruiter yet to be answered. I love the Navy and have had a great career...but if you have very precise goals, perhaps military service is not the best route. Especially if you are joining specifically for the college money (alot of unhappy sailors have found themselves in real trouble because they joined just for the schooling).

Good luck in your decisions...and do lots of research before signing that dotted line. I honestly think you have alot of unanswered questions you need to look into before you enlist.

That rating no longer exists. it has been merged with several others to form the Mass Communications Specialist rating (MC).

It's actually quite hard to get MC,let alone the NEC for what used to be PH. If you don't get in guarenteed in writing that you will get that C school, you won't necessarily get to be a photgrpher right away.. if at all.

Cuurently advancement isn't all that great for MC, because of the merge. It will probably be slow for the next couple of years, so if you were looking to get promoted quickly, prepare to be disappointed.

The Chief is entirely correct. Listen to the man.
