If the belt is changed every 60 thousand miles, there is nothing to worry about. For a 20 buck belt, it seems kinda silly to be sitting on the side of the road with a car that has shut down just because you want to save 20. Once every 5 or 6 years, it is not much to pay for prevention.

I believe so, simply because the manufacture warns of piston valve contact and internal damage to the engine if timing belt is loose or disconnected. It says do not turn camshaft or crankshaft. That's all I could find. But the jetta came with lots of engines, so they may be different.

Alright dude if the timing belt breaks u will know it, It will make a god awful noise and the engine will shut off. Do not try to start it back if it does shut off because it will mess up the head. Believe me man I know from experience. Not that I have done it myself because I'm not an iddiot, but I have had some iddiot friends who have done it and I had to change the head for them.

VR6 has a timing chain that needs replacement at approx. 160K, 1.8Turbo needs belt replacement at 105K, and the 2.OL should be done around 80K. The 2.0L is the only one that wouldn't damage the engine if it broke.
