Right now... out of the Windows choices... XP is your best bet. Vista's still working out the kinks and holes.

In the PC world (as opposed to Mac) your best bet is actually not Windows - it's Linux!

Download an .iso (a file that CD burning software understands - it's a complete CD in one file) of Kubuntu and burn it to disk.

http://kubuntu.com/

Put the CD in your CD / DVD drive and restart your computer to try Kubuntu without installing it - it runs off the disk completely and doesn't touch your hard drive.

Linux is a tiny bit different than XP / Windows, but it's much, much more secure and you can run it on computers too old to run recent versions of Windows.

Try it a few different times - it grows on you really fast!

I saw some benchmarks on XP vs Vista and on most pc's XP was actually about the same. It is also going to be more compatible with everything at this time. I'd stick with XP for now unless you are an IT person.

I think that xp it's the best because is easy for the use the people and vista is different and the programs that you use in xp or 2000 are very incompatibles with vista and is no recomendable use vista in this moment

NO! XP IS THE MOST HACKABLE PIECE OF CRAP ON THE PLANET! Either go for Windows 2000, Windows Vista, or if you're very security conscious, get a Mac as soon as Mac OS X Leopard comes out.

XP is the best right now. Vista sounds interesting, but it does not have many programs installed successfully on it. besides there are some bugs too.

It is not Vista that is for sure.
You should read this short article from Forbes Magazine.
http://www.forbes.com/security/2007/02/10/microsoft-vista-drm-tech-security-cz_bs_0212vista.html
That should answer all of your questions about Vista.
Windows 2000 is about the best OS that Microsoft ever made.
Personally I use Linux because that is the best OS that I have ever worked with outside of Mac OSX.

not vista.....yet, give it a year, a couple of service packs and a whole host of patches and maybe, just maybe, if you have a good pc with lots of recourses for it .....it might be worth getting!

Most techies will say 2000, xp is very similar to 2000 but with prettier interface, simple controls and a few security bugs.

I currently run both, and a linux machine.

i see no problem with xp but vista which is the new one has only been released so give it few months for microsoft to release service packs to fix any errors and bugs and then go for vista.
however you need a minimum of 512MB ram to run it.
