as you mention, you previously own a Analogue SLR. it's likely that you have a collection of lenses.why not searching for a new digital SLR that can take your old lense? it's gonna save you alot of money!
If you really wanting to start anew, get a Canon or Nikon. as for model, you really have to go hunt it yourself. personal preference are different. so buy the best you can afford.

Well it depends on what system you prefer. I would probably advise that if you want to get into freelance journalism you stick to one of the main brands ie. Nikon or Canon.
(or are you wanting to use your lenses from your analogue SLR on your digital? If so, what system do you have?)
Nikon have just released the D40 model which is quite affordable, or you could look for a second hand D50.
There are forums on many camera sights that can give more detailed advice (eg. www.dpreview.com).
I have a Pentax K100D which I find really nice, and it is now even cheaper since the newer model K10D was released. The Pentax K100D offers great value for money as it has Shake Reduction built into the camera which offers image stabilisation on all lenses (for Canon and Nikon you have to buy lenses with image stabilisation built into them, with added expense).
However, many people don't think Pentax is a sufficiently supported system at professional level (though it seems to be making a comeback).
Welcome to the world of Digital SLR!

Photo journalism is a real challenge for any Camera. For you speed and quality are equally important.
I am personally a fan of cannon digital cameras.....But recently Sony has come up with(alpha) DSLR-A100 digital single lens reflex (D-SLR) camera is the first product to come from Sony's aquisition of Konica Minolta's D-SLR and technologies. The DSLR-A100 is based heavily on the Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D and incorporates a higher resolution 10.2-megapixel image sensor, improved 40-segment metering, higher resolution 2.5-inch Clear Photo LCD Plus, and a new Anti Dust technology. The DSLR-A100 will have the highest resolution available in its class. It will be introduced along with 19 high-quality Sony lenses and a wide range of accessories.
The DSLR-A100 camera helps to combat blurry pictures through the use of higher light sensitivity (up to ISO 1600) and Super SteadyShot image stabilization, a Sony technology that shifts the image sensor to compensate for camera movement. Because Super SteadyShot is built into the camera body, all compatible lenses are image-stabilized allowing from 2 to 3-1/2 stops of latitude in exposure. This means hand-held telephoto shooting at lower shutter speeds and more opportunities to shoot in natural lighting without a tripod or a flash.
I have been using cannon xti but dont have Image stabilisation Lense which are really expensive, and i was really impressed with the results from sony alfa.....and it make sense to buy a camera with image stabilisation rather than buying expensive lenses with image stabilisation..they cost about $ 750 on ebay...good luck

Make a shortlist of makes from Canon,Pentax,Olympus,Sony,Nikon,Leica as they are major players. Visit www.dpreview.com where you will see nearly all major digital cameras have been tasted and rated. Very valueable resourse for anyone looking into buying cameras.
You will also be able to participate in forum which is very active!
For prices why nor buy a copy of Amateur Photographer magazine for any or most news stand in which you will see ads by retailers.
