We have a cross between a spaniel and a poodle (her name is marmite haha). This is the first time we have had a female dog and she is 'on heat' - (basically it is that time of the month) - how long does it last for and if we spay her does it stop?

a bitchs heat cycle lasts for 3 weeks (watch out for last 10 days tho as this is when she is most likely to attract those unwanted male dogs)

if you get her spayed it will stop her coming into season (which is twice a year)

ask your vet how long after her season is finished before she can be spayed as all vets are different (our vet has just told us to wait 6-8 weeks after, so within the next week or 2 my ckcs will be in the huff with me)

hope this helps you!

It goes on for 21 days but you should avoid male dogs for a full month.

Few good vets will spay a female in season as the amount of blood in her womb will make surgery dangerous.Wait for 3 months then get her spayed.

She can be in heat for up to 30 days at a time, twice a year. Usually, a heat cycle has started before you notice it. By the time you see the evidence, she may have been in heat for a week. From what I've read and been told, she could continue in heat for up to two more weeks after you see the last of the evidence.

Yes, if you have her spayed, that will end her heat cycles.

Hi, they are in heat for 2 - 3 weeks, from day 10, be careful as 10 - 18 days she could get pregnate very easily. Sometimes they bleed for the whole 3 weeks and other dogs may just bleed up to around day 10, but be careful with her around male dogs for 3 weeks to be on the safe side.
If you do get her sprayed, this will stop her coming on heat.

If you spay her it will stop.. it will also prevent pyometra (puss in the uterus.. can be fatal) and other probs... see below for full cycle details...

PROESTRUS 8-13 Days
The ***** may urinate more frequently; she will not tolerate other bitches. She will have a bloody vaginal discharge and her vulva will be swollen. She will be attractive to the male but will not accept mating.

·OESTRUS 4-7 Days
The bloody discharge becomes clearer and straw like in colour and her vulva softens.
She will hold her tail to one side ‘Lordosis’ and will accept mating.

·METOESTRUS 30-64 Days
The ***** will no longer accept mating. This is when lactation starts. It is at this time possible false pregnancy will occur. All vaginal discharge dries up and the vulva returns to normal. This signals the end of her season.

·ANOESTRUS 4 months approx
No sexual activity takes place. The reproductive system returns to normal size.

The cycle is about 21 days, days 12 -14 are the critical dates for mateing. But I would be careful for another week e.g. 28days
