I've been trying everything from treats to carrying him.I know that this is his first real home, but I want to get him outside. He tries pulling away and running. PLEASE HELP!

Put a step-in harness and a leash on him..Take him outside and sit with him if weather permits..
the step-in is an inescapable harness that is humane.
they look like this> http://www.canine-spirit.com/upload/products/Step%20in%20Harness%20White%20Background%20240.jpg

You put it on by putting a foot in each side, as pictured, and then fasten on top of his back.> http://cetaceacorp.com/image.php?object_id=756&image_id=705
BLESS you for taking the time, patience and love to help this poor baby!

Did he come from an abusive home prior to you? That is not unusual behavior for dogs that were abused.

First start identifying a word for the action like "potty". Every time he goes say "go potty" wherever that may be that he does go. Once he learns the word for the action it gets a bit easier.

Crate him when he is home during the day. When you get home go to him and leash him up and immediately go to the door. Bring treats with you. Gently lead him to the door and stand with the door open. Give him treats while standing there and then shut the door and stay inside. A few minutes later repeat the process and again just stand in the open door watching the outside with treats.

Don't force him and in the meantime buy the puppy pads so you can learn the word with him. After several days of standing in the door start bringing his puppy pad closer to the door and when he goes say "good Potty". Soon the pad should be dragged to the stoop on the outside and again repeat the process. Once he goes make sure you praise him and give him a treat.

He needs to learn that you are boss. Take him out every hour and don't let him in until he goes. With a new puppy, sometimes that can mean standing outside for 30 minutes or more. If he still refuses, bring him in for 10 minutes, then take him back out. Make sure you have treats with you, and praise A LOT when he goes. Puppies know when they can get away with something, so by bringing him in, he knows he has won. Also make sure you don't ever use pee pads or papers, as that will lead him to believe the house is his bathroom. It will take some time and patience 9and a few puddles in the house) before he gets this right, but he will get it eventually. He's in a new place and scared right now. Afert you've won his trust, he will do anything to please you.

try throwing a few treats in the yard. Make going outside a game- take a favorite toy and play "get the toy" edging outside little by little. Act very excited about going out-soft voices, "We're going out, oh, boy, what a great day." A treat bribe will usually get any doggy to go outside.

Treats, praise and time are all that you can do. When he does leave the house, praise him like he has done the smartest best thing in the world.

Give it time and love, and it will work.

Also leave the door to the house open so he can feel more secure. Try by just going out a few steps

Try walking him on a leash. Walk him around in the house first with it on, then try out side. This might help him feel more at home. Once you get him to go outside with it on after a few times, take it off when you get outside. Then eventually he will go out without it.

Contact the facility that you got him from to see if they have any history on him. Be patient and consistent, assuming the role of leader. Do NOT baby him by saying things like . . "oooh its ok baby" etc- this only reinforces this behavior. Try a harness as mentioned above but start in the house with it, to get him used to it. And dont forget to praise him with attention and/or treats when he relaxes and cooperates with the harness on. With some patience and consistency, you both will get thru this. Good Luck!

The best & fastest way to train him is this : First thing every morning , take his food & water dish , fill them up , take them outside & let him watch you every step ( Make sure he knows what he's getting ) . Do this for 3 or 4 days or until he starts picking his spots to do his business . It will work :) Good luck
