A friend told me that if a Rear Admiral is unmarried then they have to be known as married to the Queen. Sounds odd to me ... is it true?

It's just a saying. Like being married to their job in other words. In the services your working for your country and the Queen is the head of the country so where people say ' they are married to their job ' in the forces they say ' they are married to the Queen '.

Highly possible. If someone in the Royal Navy has risen to the rank of Rear Admiral without getting married that could be construed as so devoted to the service they did not want to get married for what ever reason.

When you think about it you can't take your wife to sea. Would it not be more noble to stay unmarried rather than give your wife the heartache of spending all that time alone?

Married to the Queen is actually a compliment.

Never heard that one. Sounds like an "old boys" type saying - they sort of terminology to be used in the Gentlemens Clubs.

Not true. However if someone devotes all his time to his work, he's often described as "married to his job", meaning he doesn't find time for other matters, this just a Service equivalent.

Your parents told you not to talk to strangers. What weird company you must keep. Mummy wouldn't like it.

That's a joke at the expense of gay people. If they are a REAR admiral, they're married to the QUEEN. wink wink. get it.
