Is he that kind of guy? Does he want this book read by the most people, or does he just want $$$?

He probably would not. It’s not that he isn’t sincere in his conviction, but the man has to make a living, and there is no reason why he should forgo to profits from the book. After all the cost of “A Letter to a Christian Nation” is so cheap that it is not prohibitive.

I know that this is a bit presumptive, but if you cannot afford a book as cheap as “A Letter to a Christian Nation”, you are probably not all that interested in the subject matter to begin with. After all, who wouldn’t sacrifice a few material luxuries, if they are truly interested in a subject.

Besides, Sam Harris gives lectures to many organizations, that post them on places like YouTube for free. So he is in essence enjoying the best of both worlds. He is making good money off of his writing, and he is disseminating his philosophy in a format that is accessible to people of limited means.

Why should he? Tim LaHaye didn't forfeit his royalties for "Left Behind." Countless Christian authors make a very good living from their books. Why not Sam Harris?

Why would anyone do that? He spent a long time working on that book, he deserves to make a bit of money. I'm not aware of too many writers giving up their money to have more people read their book.

How would forfeiting his royalties help it spread?

Maybe. He probably already has a deal with his publisher, and the publisher wouldn't want to make it free, so it would still cost money.
